Jeanette Mulkey Melton

Charlotte Jeanette Mulkey Melton left this world Friday, April 21, 2017 in a Texarkana, Tx. Hospice facility. She was born January 18, 1940 in Bruce. She attended Bruce School district and was awarded a GED from Texarkana, Tx. She was a retired hairstylist and member of Hilcrest Baptist Church.

On January 28, 1956, Jeffrey Claude Melton (J.C) married Charlotte (Jeanette) Mulkey. The young couple (he 18, she 16), told their parents they were heading to the movies that night. He even bought three tickets to prove his story. With her sister, Molly, in tow, they went straight to the highly respectable, Preacher Crocker’s house. After a few nervous knocks on the front door, there was no response. The three raced up the back steps and again knocked on the back door. Preacher Crocker was eating supper with his wife. He asked the kids what they were doing there, though he already knew. After a few stern questions for the groom concerning love and how on earth he would explain getting eloped to her parents, the preacher took the marriage license, put it in his pocket, began eating his supper, and told them to come back when they were older. His wife chimed in and exclaimed, “Don’t you be messin’ with these fine young people. They’re in love!” He chuckled and the two were then married, right there, in the kitchen for $2.50 (because that was all J.C. had left in his pocket), with Molly and Preacher Crocker’s wife as witnesses. As the newlyweds were leaving, Preacher Crocker gave J.C. one more important piece of advice; “Keep your head high, and take care of that young lady!” And take care of her he did. For the rest of her life.

The two moved to Texarkana on April 1, 1956 and began a family. They loved one another for 62 years. On the last day of her life, J.C. told her she gets more and more beautiful every day. Their love was straight from a story book, a beautiful testimony to behold, and a legend for all who knew them.

Survivors include her husband, J.C. Melton, Nash, Tx.: son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Beth Melton, Texarkana, Tx; daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and Ed Soriano, Flower Mound, Tx., and Jan and Johnny Hall, Avery, Tx.: siblings, Arlean Castleberry, Betty Jo Turner, Jimmy Mulkey, Molly Bush, Dianne Shows, Billy Joe Mulkey, Jerry Mulkey: eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Services were held Monday, April 24 with Rev. Joe Owen officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Texarkana 2407 Galleria Oaks, Texarkana, Tx. 75503.
