Curtis Spencer

John Curtis Spencer, 91, passed away at his home Thursday, June 28, 2018. He was born October 2, 1926 in Calhoun County to John T. and Elma Blevins Spencer. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a retired farmer. He was well known for selling his homegrown vegetables for over 40 years on the square in Houston, up until 2013. He was of the Baptist faith and currently attended Vardaman First Baptist Church.

He leaves behind his wife of 73 years, Delorese Spencer; daughters, Glenda (Jessie) Chrestman, Vardaman; Ann Spencer,  Vardaman; sister, Anna Lois Byars, Vardaman;  grandsons, James (Sonja) Chrestman,   Grenada County, and Wayne Chrestman,  Colorado; great-grandsons, Jordan and Jay Chrestman, Grenada County; Gavin and Noah Chrestman, Vardaman, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John T. and Elma Spencer, an infant baby boy; sister, Grace Clark; brothers-in-law Vernon Clark and Reuben Byars, and nephew, Kenneth Byars.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 30 at 1 at Southern Funeral Chapel in Houston with Bro. Fred Hartley and Bro. Robert Earl Alexander officiating. Burial will follow in Chickasaw Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family will be Saturday, June 30 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be James Chrestman, Jordan Chrestman, Jay Chrestman, Gavin Chrestman, Noah Chrestman, Keith Pettit and Earl McGreger. Honorary pallbearers are James E. Clark, Kenneth Alexander, Danny Williams, Don Cook, Gene Dallas, Dewitt Moore and Danny Alford.
