Lou Ada Hanson

Lou Ada B. Hanson passed away peacefully on April 4, 2020. She was 90 years old and was born December 23, 1929 to her parents, Harry Adolph Bogen and Lisette Sarah Meltzer, both now deceased.  

Mrs. Hanson grew up in Le Mars and De Moines, Ia. After graduating from high school, she attended Ward-Belmont University in Nashville.  From there she went to Iowa State where she received a curriculum in Foods and Nutrition and a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics.

On November 3, 1951, she married Newton Felix Hanson, Jr. and they were married for 67 years. He passed away September 16, 2019.

She was a housewife and worked briefly for the State’s WIC program in 1977-1978 traveling Calhoun county and the surrounding counties as well. She attended First Presbyterian Church in Gulfport, and was very active in her church life, volunteering when needs arose.  She also helped with the GED program in Hancock county. She was a member of Diamondhead Community Church and it was there  she helped with the Katrina disaster by running the kitchen for numerous volunteers on a daily basis. Her love was taking care of people especially husband, Newt, and her three sons. She loved to cook and entertain, quilting and playing games of all kinds.

She is survived by her sons, Phillip Benton Hanson (wife, Kim Sand), William Douglas Hanson (wife, Linda Hughes) and Hugh Kirkwood Hanson, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. 

She and her husband started their family in Bruce, moved to Newport, AR in 1979 and then to Diamondhead in 1999. In 2014, Newton and Lou Ada Hanson moved to Seashore Highlands in Gulfport to spend their final days.

The family has requested a private service to be held sometime in the future.  She will be laid to rest next to her mother in Ames, Ia. at the Forest Lawn Division of the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
