Maveline Murphree

Maveline Parker Murphree, 95, passed away at Yalobusha County Nursing Home Wednesday April 23, 2014. She was born March 10, 1919 in Old Town, Calhoun County, MS.  She was the daughter of Clara and Buddy Parker. Maveline graduated from Pittsboro High School and married the late Howard Murphree in 1937. They lived in Pittsboro, MS; San Pedro, CA; and Memphis, TN before retiring to Oxford MS in 1985. Maveline was a devoted wife and beloved “Memaw” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She was passionate about food and cooking.  She particularly enjoyed gardening and raising her own vegetables to prepare them in grand southern style.  She was a long time member of Temple Baptist Church in Memphis and on coming back to MS joined the 1st Baptist Church of Oxford.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 10:30 am until service time at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City. Funeral Service will be at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel in Calhoun City with Bro. Robert Allen officiating. Burial will be in Pittsboro Cemetery in Pittsboro; MS. Pryor Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers are Ed Reid, Tommy Parker, Frank Long, & Johnny Rikard. She is survived by her son, Phil (Susan) Murphree,  Wilmington, DE; grandchildren Scott Murphree, New York, NY and Amy  Poole, Wilmington DE; great grandchildren ,Abigail and Bradford Poole, both of Wilmington, DE; and brother Billy Parker,  Brandon, MS. She was preceded in death by brothers, Durrell and Sam Buck Parker and sisters Zenobia Long and Lorraine Reid, and her parents. Memorials may be offered in her memory to Lafayette County RSVP at 107 Courthouse Square, Oxford MS 38655.
