Rena Mae Spratlin Hood Patterson went home to the Lord Monday, July 7, 2014. At the time of her death, she was at home in Old Town community, Calhoun County, where she lived with her daughter, Linda White. The daughter of William Joseph ‘Joe’ and Sarah Ella (Bailey) Spratlin, Rena was raised in a Southern Baptist Christian home. She was a member of Old Town Baptist Church, Pittsboro.
At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Saviour. Her life reflected God’s presence and guidance. Traveling by wagon, she helped raise money for the construction of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Calhoun County. A devoted Christian woman, she has served as Sunday School teacher, Children’s Discipleship leader, Bible School teacher, church secretary, church hostess, and church clerk. Her faith was practiced in all of her life.
She was married at 16 to Junior Hood, gave birth to their son at 18, and was widowed by WWII at 19. Years later, she married William Claxton ‘Clax’ Patterson. The marriage was blessed with two daughters. They made their home and raised their three children in Calhoun County. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, excellent homemaker, accomplished seamstress, and skilled cook. With advancing years and failing health, she made her home with daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Don White.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Junior Hood; husband, Claxton Patterson; four sisters, Mayford Spratlin, Lorine Spratlin, Mable Spratlin Wright, Josie Spratlin Murphree; two brothers, Rex Spratlin Sr., Elmer Spratlin, and great-grandson, Austin Hood. She is survived by a sister, Marine (Charles) Clark, Starkville; a brother, E.J. (Ellen) Spratlin, Hot Springs, Ar.; a son, Rayburn (Betty) Hood, Oxford; two daughters, Linda (Don) White and Nancy (Bobby) Cannon, Pittsboro; six grandchildren, Richard Hood, Scott City, Mo.; Haley (Gordon) Smith, Bowling Green, Ky.; Russell Hood, Oxford; Donna (Paul) Ingle, Calhoun City; Scott (Stephany) Cannon, Vardaman, and Melissa (Donnie) Hubbard, Big Creek; 16 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces,nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Phil Lucius, Mike Lucius, Tony Parker, Cody Clements, Terry Spratlin and Chase Clements. Honorary pallbearers will be A.D. Spratlin, Homa Bailey and Bobby Fleming.
The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Danny Spratlin, Rev. Robert Earl Alexander and Rev. Justin Gates. Music will be provided by Linda Ward, Rev. Keith Spratlin and Sheryl Fleming.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 9 from 5-8 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce. The funeral service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, and burial will follow at Pittsboro Cemetery, all under the direction of Larry Parker, Parker Memorial Funeral Home, Bruce.
