Ethel Y. Schwalenberg, 92, of Sour Lake, Tx., died September 18, 2013. She was born January 19, 1921 in Barfield, Al., the daughter of Arthur C. Yates and Ettie Pitts Yates. She was a homemaker, quilter and loved working in her flower bed. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She and her husband, Grady, moved to Sacramento, CA where he was in the war and she worked in the aircraft factory. When the war ended, they moved to Vardaman.
Visitation will be Saturday from 5-8 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Vardaman. Her funeral service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sonny Burt, Rocky Fleming, Rodney Gillespie, Whitt Schwalenberg, James Ray Schwalenberg and Dewayne Winters.
Survivors include three sons, Gary (Pat) Schwalenberg, Texas; Davy (Roseanne) Schwalenberg, MS, and Don (Joy) Schwalenberg, MS; four grandchildren, Whit (Angie) Schwalenberg, MS; Taylor (William) Pruiett, MS; Leslie (Mike) Machtinger, Virginia; Deanna Schwalenberg, MS; four great grandchildren, Madalyn Schwalenberg, Grady Machtinger, Emmy and Patrick Pruett; two sisters, Vida Childs, Georgia; Geneva Smith, AL; three sisters-in-law, Inez Schwalenberg, MS; Nancy Yates and Nadyne Yates, AL, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady, whom she married in 1945; grandson, Ed Schwalenberg; six brothers, Albert, Abra, Edwards, Clayton, Cloyse and Willis Yates, and a sister, Edna Fincher.
