James Wortham

James Timothy Wortham, 59, a resident of Navarre, Fl., died Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center in FWB, Fl. He was born January 1955 to the late Harold and Alberta Wortham in Calhoun City. He graduated from Calhoun City High School and he was a lifetime member of The Church of the Living God, Calhoun City.

A celebration of his life will be Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 2 p.m. at The Church of the Living God, 130 Willis St., Calhoun City.


Gloria Hardin

Houston-Gloria Hardin, 64, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at North MS Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born April 23, 1950 in Chickasaw County to Vernon “Slim” Reeves and Levada Blissard Reeves.  She was a bookkeeper for Houston Funeral Home for over 20 years before retiring. She was the secretary/treasurer for Poplar Springs Baptist Church. She was a regular performer at Sparta Opry, singing and playing her guitar. She was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Calhoun County.

Funeral services were Friday, August 1, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Calhoun County.  Officiating were Bro. Benny Hill, Bro. Robert E. Alexander and Bro. Joey Hamilton.  Burial followed in Poplar Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers were Terry Tunnell, Lance Tunnell, Kevin Tunnell, Darrin Vance, Jon Hardin, and Brian Hicks.

She is survived by her husband, Kenny Hardin, Houston; her sons, Neal (Lisa) Washington, Houston,  and Michael Hardin, Jackson; one sister, Glenda (Russell) Cothran, Houston; her grandchildren, Chloe and Bentley, and a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Vernon “Slim” and Levada Reeves.

Southern Funeral Home of Houston was in charge of arrangements.

James Sykes

James Edward Sykes, 61, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2014 at NMMC in Pontotoc. He was born March 7, 1953, the son of Joe D. Sykes and Dora Mae Herrod. He was a log truck driver for Hardin Trucking, and a member of Dentontown M.B. Church.

Survivors include one son, Edward C. Sykes; one daughter, Iris Sykes; four brothers, James (Nora) Sykes, Ricky Sykes, Sammy Sykes, Memphis; Terry Sykes; three sisters, Donnie Draine, Jeffie Ezell; Ida Sykes, and four grandchildren.

His funeral service will be Saturday at noon at Church of God Our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ in Calhoun City with Rev. Phililp Brackett officiating. Burial will be in Dentontown Mt. Zion Cemetery in Slate Springs. Belle Memorial funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Taylor Dobbs III

Taylor Reese Dobbs, III, 32, died on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at Centennial Medical Center, Nashville.  Born on June 12, 1982, in Amory, he was a son of Kay Nettle McKinney Dobbs and Taylor Reese Dobbs, Jr. Taylor was a graduate of Smithville High, Class of 2001.  A hard-worker, he was an Op-Tech technician with Nissan.  Guided by his faith in God, he was a member of Temple Heights Baptist Church, Oxford.  One who never met a stranger and was always smiling, Taylor had the gift of loving others, had a huge heart for children, and was a hugger.  Always helping others, he enjoyed spending time with his family, football, coaching kids in sports, being a role model, and was an avid Ole Miss fan.
Survivors include his wife, Jennifer Dobbs, daughter, Emma Kilgore, and son, Zay Dobbs, of Murfreesboro; mother, Kay Dobbs, Smithville; father, Taylor Reese Dobbs, Jr., Athens; grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Theodis McKinney, Nora Davis, of Smithville, and Mary Dobbs, Aberdeen; sister, Tonya Orr (Andre), Atlanta; brother, Vincent Hughes, Aberdeen; nieces and nephews, Kelsey, Daniel and Anna Walters; Olando, Olando J., and Olandria Smith.
He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Purston Davis.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM, Thursday, August 7 at the Smithville Chapel of E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Brett Williams officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope II Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chad Gibson, Cory Nails, Bryant Nails, Matt Grier, Howard Denson, Mark Doss, and Robert Walters.
Visitation will be from Noon – 1:50 PM, Thursday at the funeral home.

Bedford Oliver “Pete” Poynor, 78 of Banner,  died Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at Calhoun Health  Services in Calhoun City. Born November 29, 1935 in Sarepta, he was the son of the late Nathaniel Poynor and the late
Lila Pearl Harrison  Poynor. He was the husband of the late Beverly Jo Russell Poynor. He was a member of Lantrip Baptist Church, served in the U.S. Army for four years, and National Guard for six
years.
Surviving are son, Dean (Kathy) Poynor of Banner; daughter, Sharon (Steve) Boland, Bruce;  grandchildren, Preston Johnson, Nathan Johnson, Kyle (Courtney) Poynor, Dalton Poynor; a special friend, Etoy
Holeman, Banner;  brother, Charles Poynor, Banner, and sister, Bobbie Rooker, Okolona. He was predeceased by brothers, Labwin Poynor, Eula Poynor and Carl Poynor, sisters, Lois Crutchfield, Myrl
Barfield, Reba Barefield, Shirley Stone and Hazel Harrison.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Bro. Robert Earl
Alexander officiating. Interment will be in Memory Memorial Garden, Bruce. Pallbearers will be Benny Barefield, Billy Glen Cruthfield, Billy Poynor, Jeff Poynor, Ottis Poynor, Mickey Rooker.  Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Barfield and Doug Stone.

Sharon Gilder, 86 of Vardaman, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at a decendent’s residence in
Vardaman. Born May 18, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Thurman Marion Lowe and the late Gladys Fleming
Lowe. She was a homemaker, and  a member of Vardaman First Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late William “Jasper”  Gilder. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Monette Lowe, Margaret
Waldrop, Dorothy Price, and Jeannie Nathey; brothers, James Davis Lowe, Thurman “Ish” Lowe, and Franklin Lowe.
Surviving are daughters, Wilka Gilder of Vardaman; Cheryl Gilder of Vardaman; Karen (Mark) Harrelson,
Vardaman; Annelle (Kenneth) Scott, Vardaman; a son, Bill Gilder, Vardaman; grandchildren,
Brandon (Toni) Taylor, Bay St. Louis; Kenneth (Erica) Scott, Vardaman; Leslie (Nathan) Fugett,
Vardaman; Jay Scott, Vardaman; Nicole Evans, Vardaman; Jeff Harrelson, Vardaman, and
Will Harrelson, Vardaman, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Robby Beckett

Robert Rodney Beckett, Jr., 45, departed this life August 6, 2014, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, in Denton, Tx. He was a taxi driver and an oil and gas landman. He was a member of Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church in Flower Mound, Tx.  Robby was born September 18, 1968, in Oxford, to Robert Rodney Beckett and Patricia Daniel Beckett. He graduated from Bruce High School in 1986 where he lettered in five  sports, was named Mr. Bruce High School, won the Trojan Award, and was selected to the Hall of Fame. He attended Northwest Junior College where he excelled in football and was twice named to the Mississippi Junior College All-State team. He later attended the University of Mississippi. He loved his children, his friends and family, sports, especially football, and the Ole Miss Rebels. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Rodney Beckett; his paternal grandparents, William Wilbern Beckett and Viola Collins Beckett, and his maternal grandparents, O.V. Daniel and Odein Ingram Daniel.

He is survived by his fiancee, Bobbie Brown, Denton, Tx.; two sons, Robert Tucker Beckett and William Tannor Beckett, Alexander City, AL; his mother and stepfather, Patricia Beckett Sims and Kent Sims, Flower Mound, Tx.; one brother, Ryan (Sara) Beckett, Jackson; one sister, Ashley (Paul) Soliz, Cleveland; two step-sisters, Anissa (Adrian) Briseno and Angelique (Hadly) Weaver, both of Lubbock, Tx.; nephews, Nathan Soliz, Thomas Beckett, Huston Briseno, Hutson Briseno, Brady Weaver; nieces, Katie Soliz, Eliza Beckett, Riley Weaver, Allie Soliz, and a host of uncles, aunts and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. Sunday, August 10, at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. at  the funeral home with Bro. Darrell Logan officiating. Burial will be at Bruce Cemetery in Bruce.

Funeral services for Billy Deen Jones, Jr., 64, will be held Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014 11 a.m. at North Greenwood Baptist Church in Greenwood. He died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014.  He was born  September 22, 1949 to Billy and Doty (Neal) Jones, Sr. in Vicksburg and resided in Greenwood since 1984. He was the owner of Jones Transportation services in Greenwood, and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. He was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church and attended North Greenwood Baptist Church. He was also a member of  Greenwood Elks Lodge #854, and Single Buck Hunting Club. He is preceded in death by his father Billy Deen Jones, Sr.

He is survived by wife of 25 years, Pat Jones,  Greenwood; mother, Doty Jones, Greenwood; two  daughters, Lori (Lee) Peden, Bruce, and Amy Tackett, Greenwood; two sisters, Debbie Holt, Jackson, and Terry (Robert) Vandevere, Yazoo City; three grandchildren, Blake Peden, Broc Peden, and Jenabeth Peden, and two nieces and nephews.

Visitation is today, Monday, Aug. 11, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at the Wilson & Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood, and Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014 from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service at North Greenwood Baptist Church. Dr. Jim Phillips and Dr. Billy Ray Stonestreet will officiate.  Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Blake Peden, Broc Peden, Lou Holt, Kyle Whitehead, John Malouf, Danny Smith, Rhyne Howard, and William Leflore. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Greenwood Elks Lodge # 854, and members of Single Buck Hunting Club.

Kenneth Paul Snelling, 66, of Bruce, died Thursday, August 7, 2014. Born Tuesday, May 4, 1948, he was the son of the late Henry Noel Snelling and the late Jesse Viola Chrestman  Snelling. He was a member of Bruce First Baptist Church. Retired from The U.S. Army, Member of the VFW in Jonesboro, Ar. 

Surviving are sons, Kenneth Paul Snelling, Jr. of Southaven, and Jason Owen Snelling of Ft. Belvoir, VA; daughters, Leslie Grace Snelling, Vail, CO and Christina Kaye Turner, Brookland, AR; brother, Noel Snelling Jr., Bruce; sisters, Elizabeth Keith, Water Valley,  and Lee Mize, Bruce.

A funeral service will be Friday at 2 p.m.  at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Bruce Cemetery, Bruce.

Carolyn Parker Rhodes

Carolyn Parker Rhodes, 90, of Mishawaka, In. died Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Hospice House of South Bend. The Starkville native was born October 23, 1923 to George W. and Lillian Carolyn (Aven) Parker. On December 24, she married Jack Douglas Rhodes in Iuka, and he preceded her in death November 5, 2008 after 60 years of marriage. She was a registered nurse in obstetrics and pediatrics for over 40 years, working in area hospitals until her retirement as Supervising Nurse in the pediatrics Dept. at South Bend Osteopathic Hospital. She was a member of South Side General Baptist Church, was an avid fan of Notre Dame and the Chicago Cubs, and enjoyed an occasional trip to the casinos in Las Vegas.

She is survived by her children, Jack D. (Kathy) Rhodes, Jr., Michigan City, and James Timothy (Peggy) Rhodes, Niles MI; sisters, Alice (Fred) Burke and Sara Kenwright, both of Greenwood, and Sharon Brasher, Foley AL; brothers, George (Sara) Parker, Clinton, and Sidney (June) Parker, Big Creek; grandchildren, Laura Rhodes (Shasky), Cleveland OH; Jerod (Samantha) Rhodes, Jeffersontown, KY, and great-grandchildren, Hollis and Harper Rhodes of Jeffersontown.

Her funeral service was Friday, July 25 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy. Burial was in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Henry Ernest Conner, 97 of Pittsboro died  Sunday, August 10, 2014, at her son’s residence in New Albany. Born January 1, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Walter Wright and the late Dora Wright. She was a member of Bruce First Baptist Church Bruce. 

Surviving are son, William Shaw (Charlotte) Reid, New Albany; daughters, Joan Doolittle Clark, Pittsboro, and Mary Frances (Joe) Scallorns, California, MO; grandchildren, Bill Clark, William Shaw Reid Jr., Rhonda Monteilo, Julie McMillien, and Joseph R. Scallorn, and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by sister, Nora E. Funente, Waveland.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Bro. Rex Wilburn officiating. Interment will be in Pittsboro Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Clark, Benny Collins, Charles Herring, Larry Miller, Joseph Scallorns, and William Shaw Reid Jr.

Ray Hamblin, 76, of Houston, died August 11, 2014 at Trace Regional Hospital in Houston. He was born November 9, 1937 in Houlka, the son of Benny Lee and Velma  Sprayberry Hamblin. He was retired from Gold Medal Manufacturing in Pyland, and was pastor of 33 years at Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Vardaman.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Emma Skeen Hamblin, Houston, whom he married March 14, 1961; four children, Gerald (Sheila) Hamblin, Houston; Rhonda Knox, Houlka; Lisa (Bruce) Price, Houston; Tracey (Damon) Doston, Houston; special daughter, Penny McKellor, Una; eight grandchildren, Andrew Hamblin, Perry Knox Jr., Kristin Bevil, Samantha Moore, Marcus Dotson, Terri Dotson, Emily Parker, Maycee Price; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Faye Moss, Houlka; Janice McKnight, Pontotoc; one brother, Charles Hamblin, Houston, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation is tonight, Tuesday, from 5-9 p.m. at the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Vardaman. His funeral service  will be Wednesday, at 2 p.m. at Church of the Lord Jesus Christ with Bro. Glenn Washington and Bro. Adam Byrd officiating. Burial will be in Skuna Valley Cemetery in Houlka.

Jimmy C. Moorhead, 68, of Bruce, died Friday, August 15, 2014, at  his residence.
Born August 22, 1945 in Bruce, he was the husband of the late Betty Massey Moorhead.
He served in the U.S. Navy, and he was employed by the University of Mississippi.
He attended Westside Baptist Church in Bruce, and Bible study with Jehovah’s Witness.
Surviving are sister, Barbara Murk of Bruce; nephew, Mike (Mary) Hensley of Bruce; nieces, Kim
Davidson, Bruce; Kellie (Mike) Byars, Saltillo, and Penny Mask, Pontotoc.
He was predeceased by his parents, Marvin Clarence and Belva Captolia Moorhead; sister, Dorothy Hensley, and
niece, Kerry Heinz.
His funeral service will be graveside at Mt. Moriah Cemetery Saturday at 10 a.m.  with Bro. Bill
Williams officiating.

James Robert Magness , Jr., 67 of Collierville, Tn., and  formerly of Huntsville, Al. died Wednesday,
August 20, 2014, at his residence in Collierville. Born September 11, 1946 in Fort Dix, NJ, he was the son of the late James Magness  and the
late Mary  Crawford  Magness. He was the husband of Gloria Glenn Magness, whom he married August 3, 1973 .
He was a graduate of Auburn University and was employed by Huntsville Times as a Sportswirte & Copy Editor for
39 years.
Surviving are son, Yancy (Kelly) Magness, Olive Branch; daughter, Laura (Matt) Parris, Mobile, AL;  brother,
Howard Magness, Lafayette, LA; sisters, Minnie Watson, Anniston, AL and Oma Jean Maloney, Auburn, AL;
grandchildren, Ivy Magness, Henson Magness, Josephine Magness, and PaigeParris.
Funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Bro. Darrell

   She was born November 9, 1936, to Sim Roane Murphree and Vangie Shields Murphree in Bruce. She was a homemaker and a member of Prospect Baptist Church.
   The funeral service will be Friday, August 22, at 1 p.m. at Houston Funeral Home with Rev. David Blackwell officiating.  Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Houlka. Houston Funeral Home in Houston is in charge of the arrangements.
   She is survived by her husband,  Wilburn E. Harmon, Houlka; her daughter, Susan Harmon Roye and Billy Fuller, Houlka; her sons, Mike (Sherry) Harmon, Houlka; Terry Harmon, Houlka; her grandchildren, Karen (Chad) Cobb, Andrea (Brian) Adams, Maleah Eaton, Taylor Eaton, Stephanie Harmon, Abegel Harmon, April Roye, Michael Wayne Roye, Brandy Fuller; her great-grandchildren, Logan Winstead, Drew Winstead, Jack Cobb, Bennon Adams, Adalyn Adams, Dakota Roye, J.T. William Hodge

William L. Hodge, age 90, died Monday, August 20, 2014 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.  He was born November 29,1923, in Lafayette County, to the late Edgar and Della Davis Hodge.  William retired from the United States Army and worked for many years as a carpenter. He was a Baptist minister and throughout the years pastored several churches in the surrounding counties including: New Hope and Calvary in Coffeeville, Hopewell in Yalobusha County, Second Baptist in Water Valley, Paris Baptist Church, Springdale in Lafayette County, Turkey Creek and Driver’s Flat in Calhoun County. William enjoyed gardening, remodeling homes, watching old westerns and spending time with his coffee-drinking buddies at Turnage Drug Store.  He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family. 
Visitation will be Saturday, August 23, 2014 from 9-11 am at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley.  Funeral services will be at 11  am in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Bro. Bennie Turnage and Bro. Bill McGoodwin officiating.  Burial will be in the Old Union Cemetery in Lafayette County, with Blake Hodge, Scott Hodge, Jeff Hodge, Mike Hodge, Tim Hodge and Kevin Wilburn serving as pallbearers.
William is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mirl Harwell Hodge of Water Valle; nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sons, William Eddie Hodge, Bill Hodge and Ronnie Hodge; and his granddaughter, Amy Hodge Wilburn.

Born Tuesday, April 28, 1953 in Chicago, Il., she was the daughter of the late John Johnson and the late Mary
Caples  Gordon. She was the wife of the late Gregg Ingram.
She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and a waitress

Jimmy L. Patton, 73 of Banner, died Thursday, August 21, 2014, at his caregiver’s residence in Water Valley. Born  September 20, 1940 in Banner,  he was the son of the late Harold Patton and the late Ruby Joblin Patton. He was a graduate of Bruce High School class of 1959 and was retired from Whirlpool Appliance Corp. He served in the National Guard, and was a member of Banner Baptist Church. 

Surviving are son, Tracy (Theresa) Patton, Alexandria, VA; brothers, Lonnie (Nelda) Patton, Pittsboro, and George (Carol) Patton, Kosciusko; sister-in-law, Margaret Patton, Adamsville, TN, Nancy Patton, Bruce, and three grandchildren . He was predeceased by brothers, Roy Patton and Ernest Patton, sister, Sarah Rasberry.

His funeral service was Saturday at 1 p.m.  at Banner Baptist Church with the Bro. Danny Kelly officiating and Bro. Bobby Caples assisting. Interment was in Spring Creek Cemetery, Banner. Pallbearers were Carl Baker, Terry Joe Blount, John Bollinger, Lee McMillian, Robert Melton, Barry Patton, Jeff Patton, Tommy Patton and Tracey Patton.

Robert Arnold Gulledge, 88, died August 26, 2014 at Bruce Community Living Center. He was born June 28, 1926 at Big Creek, the son of Charles and Myrtle Carter Gulledge. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Allie Collins Gulledge of Bruce; two sisters, Claudia Mooneyham, Calhoun City, and Charlene Carna, Ca.; son-in-law, Mike Nix; daughter-in-law, Diane Costin; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was peceded in death by a sister Lillian Barbee; daughter, Barbara Nix; son, Marvin Costin and a grandson, Jeff Nix. He was a member of Bruce First Baptist Church, a WWII Navy veteran serving on the US Monterrey battleship, and was a former Mason. He formerly worked for Standard Oil Company before going to work for and retiring from Weyerhaeuser. He had a very creative mind and a avid welder, and learned to respect the ocean and its waters while serving in the Navy.Visitation will be Friday, August 29, 2014 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00P.M. and the funeral will be Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Daniel Hathorne officiating.  Burial will follow in Bruce Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Drew Costin, Jason Costin,  Paul Hendrix, Mike Isom, Mike Nix and Shane Nix.

R.V. Sutton,  94, died August 26, 2014 at N.M.M.C. in Tupelo. He was born in Calhoun County on July 2, 1920, the son of  the late Hubert and Carrie Kelley Sutton. He served in the U.S. Army as a Corporal during WW II and was a member of the V.F.W. He worked with Memphis Pepsi Cola Bottling Company until his retirement in 1970 as a production consultant for RKO Pepsi plants. He was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church in Memphis and a Mason.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Lawson Sutton of Bruce; a daughter, Mary Jo Mari, Colorado Springs, CO; two step-daughters, Melinda Arthur, Nashville, TN,  and Wanda (Tom) Sue Przybysz, N. Lauderdale, FL; step-sons, Robert David Adkins, West Palm Beach, FL; two sisters, Bernice Jenkins, Bruce, and Eloise Thompson, Memphis. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Roger Sutton, and a sister, Leona Sullivan.
Visitation will be Friday, August 29, 2014 from 1-2 p.m. with a graveside service to follow at 2  p.m. at Bruce Cemetery with Bro. Darrell Logan officiating.
Pallbearers will be Orville Carr, Bobby Heath, Danny Massey, Danny Orr and Melvin Sullivan.
