Bob Lunceford

Robert (Bob) Lunceford, 62, of Biloxi, Miss. passed away on Monday. Bob was born to Rupert and Jane Lunceford, June 26, 1951 in Calhoun City, Miss.  He graduated from Calhoun City high school in 1969, and received a B.S. in Nurse Anesthesiology from the University of Mississippi in 1979.

Bob had a passion for music and enjoyed playing the drums and piano regularly. He was a member of the Gospel Truth, a nationally recorded gospel ensemble in the early 80s.  He also wrote and composed the copyrighted song, “Read A Little More in His Book”, in 1984.  Bob enjoyed the spending time with his family, Ole Miss football, the Gulf Coast, seafood, the beach and spending time with his cherished wife of 9 years, Janie .

Bob is survived by his father, Rupert Lunceford of Calhoun City Miss. his brother, Michael Lunceford of Tupelo, Miss, and three children, April Sullivan of Brandon, Miss.; Jana Alley of Seattle, Wash., and Matt Lunceford of Mobile, Ala.  He is also survived by 7 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Calhoun City.  A service will directly follow at 11:00 a.m.


William David Bray

William David Bray, 75, of  Bruce, died July 24, 2013 at his home. He was born August 30, 1937 in Pontotoc, the son of John Almond Bray and Ora Ester Henry Bray. He served in the National Guard, and was retired as plant superintendent from Bruce Telephone Company after 35 years. He was an active member and deacon of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

Visitation is tonight, Thursday, from 5-8 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home, and Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Bro. Rob Pelkey, Bro. Philip Logan and Bro. Earl Farley will be officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Keith Baker, Larry Edwards, Ronald Edwards, Adam Logan, Wayne Logan and Jay Prewett. Honorary pallbearers will be Andrew Griffin and Mark Logan.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Logan, Bruce; one daughter, Regina Griffin, Bruce; one son, Bro. Greg (Michele) Bray, Myrtle; three sisters, twin sister Sarah Baker, Bruce; Geneva Edwards, Holcomb, and Genette Dubard, Senatobia, and three grandchildren, Andrew Griffin, Daniel Bray and Savannah Bray. He was preceded in death by an infant son; a daughter, Pamela Kay Bray, and two brothers, Lathon and LaWayne.

Jerry Hughes

Jerry Hughes, 66, former ramp agent for Northwest Airlines, was born April 3, 1947 in Bruce, and passed away July 27, 2013 at his home.

He was a Navy veteran and a Baptist.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Cathy Pennington Hughes, Horn Lake; two sons, Glen (Sandy) Jewell, Covington, Tn., and Dusty (Jennifer) Hughes, Southaven; one brother, William Hughes, Water Valley; two sisters, Martha Faye Griffin, Bruce, and Anita Howell, Statesboro, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Caleb Lambirth, Hunter Lambirth, Noah Jewell, Carli Jewell, all of Covington; Sarah Jewell, Hernando; Kalen Hughes, and Easton Hughes, both of Southaven.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Ruth Hughes, and one brother, Truman Cantrell Jr. Visitation will be Friday from noon until time of the memorial service at 2 p.m. at Twin Oaks Funeral Home in Southaven.

Raymon Lee Murphree, 84, of Vardaman, died August 1, 2013 at his daughter’s residence. He was born December 19, 1928 in Calhoun County, the son of Jim Floyd Murphree and Johnie Tallent Murphree. He was the retired owner of salvage and scrap metal and recycling, and was a member of New Liberty Baptist Church.

His funeral service was Saturday at 2 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Vardaman with Bro. Tim Cook and Bro. Sherman Adams officiating. Burial was in Taylor Cemetery. Pallbearers were Matt Free, Brian Murphree, Dustin Murphree, Eric Shane Murphree, John Murphree, Todd Murphree, Lane O’Bannon and Shane O’Bannon. Honorary pallbearers were Jeff Allen, Terry Allen, Tony Allen, Don Dugard, Jim Dugard, Steve Parker, Joe Reynolds, Chad Scott and Pete Weldon.

Survivors include one daughter, Cathy Murphree (Mike) O’Bannon, Vardaman; one son, Tommy L. (Deborah) Murphree, Olive Branch; three sisters, Ruthell Reynolds, Memphis; Helen Shipman, Marshall, Tx., and Grace Dugard, Vardaman; 10 grandchildren, Todd E. Murphree, John Raymon Murphree, Brian Scott Murphree, Cassie Murphree Free, Shane O’Bannon, Jonathan Murphree, Dana Sookrag, Tonya Daniel, Mandy Howe; 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Betterton Murphree; a son, Raymon Lee Murphree Jr.; a sister,  LaBerta Parker, and a grandson, Tracy Murphree.

Buck Pettit

Vester Clark “Buck” Pettit, 75, passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013 at NMMC in Tupelo after a lengthy illness. A Houston native, he was born October 8, 1937, to the late Clarence Pettit and Audrey Mae Clark Pettit. In his earlier career he worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. He later began working with Chickasaw County and retired after approximately 30 years of service. He was a dedicated member of Pearson Chapel Church. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards and dominos with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Peggy Ruth Dodson Pettit; his four children, Jerry (Tammy) Pettit, Linda Pettit (Stewart) McKell, Tupelo; Mike (Christy) Pettit, and Sharon Pettit (Mark) Stevens, Houston; 12 grandchildren, Chris (Ellen) Hill, Shannon; Lance Pettit, Houston; Anna Hill (Anthony) Wozinak, Scottsdale, Az.; Mark Stevens, Houlka; Shane Pettit, Orlando, Fl.; Cyndell Linley, Houston; John Taylor Stevens, Houston; Laken Pettit, Tupelo; Makenzie Pettit, Houston; Anna Ragen Pettit, Houston; Eric (Kathi) Smith, Houston; Amanda Smith, Tupelo; five great grandchildren; three brothers, James Marion (Norma) Pettit, Delbert (Helen) Pettit, and Prentiss (Treacer) Pettit; two sisters, Louise (Doc Wayne) McGee and Virginia Spencer, as well as many nieces and nephews, church family, dialysis friends, and many wonderful nurses and doctors that made his last years as peaceful as possible. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Oneal Pettit and Mervin Pettit; four sisters, Olene Vance, Ruby McCardle, Pearlie Dulaney and Jean Walters.

The funeral service was Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Houston Funeral Home with Bro. Scott Samuel officiating. Burial was in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry Dulaney, Kenneth Funderburg, Jimmy James, Joe Loftin, Jimmy Pettit and David Gene Walters.

Evelyn Bailey Brown

Evelyn Bailey Brown, 65, of Grenada, passed away Friday, Aug. 2, 2013 at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was born March 10, 1948 to Edmond Rance Bailey and Evelyn Lucille Harrell Bailey. She had a background in marketing and real estate, and was an artist for more than 20 years, owning Evelyn Brown Design.

Her funeral service will be Tuesday at First United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with Rev. Tom Potter officiating. Visitation is tonight, Monday, from 5-7 p.m. at Garner-Harper Funeral Home and Tuesday from 1-2 prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens. Survivors include her mother, Lucille H. Bailey, Vardaman; a son, Cole (Tammy)?Brown, Grenada;  a daughter, Molly (Dan)?Brown, Grenada; a brother, Eddie Bailey, Vardaman, and a sister, Rita (David)?Green, Vardaman. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Caden Brown, Blake Brown, Bronson Brown, Chase Brown and Gabriel Brown, all of Grenada.

Dayna Norman

Dayna Shae Collins Norman, 37, of Big Creek, died August 5, 2013 at her home. She was born December 19, 1975 in Bruce. She was a 1993 graduate of Bruce High School. She was a graduate of Holmes Community College with her AA degrees in nursing. She was a member of Emergency Nurses Assn. and Big Creek Baptist Church. She was an RN at NMMC in Tupelo.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-9 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce. Her funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with Dr. Daniel Hathorne officiating and Bro. Jon Haimes assisting. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Big Creek. Pallbearers will be Terry Bounds, Buddy Collins, Joby Collins, Buddy Litton, Bryant McCarty, Barney Norman, Mike Norman and T.J. Pickering. Honorary pallbearers will be NMMC E.R. staff and BHS class of 1993.

Survivors include her husband, Scott Norman, Big Creek; her daughter, Courtny Norman, Big Creek; her parents, Benny and Barbara Mahan Collins, Pittsboro; her sister, Dawn (Jeff) Ruth, Caledonia; her grandmother, Mabel Collins, Tupelo, and formerly of Bruce, and nieces, Blaire Ashlye and Cheyenne Ruth; her uncles Albert and Fred Collins, and uncle and aunt, Pop and Bobo Byars; Beth Howell, her BFF, and her NMMC family. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Jennifer Allisha Collins, and her grandparents, L.D. Collins, and Jack and Bertis Ferguson Mahan.

Orville Black

Orville Black, 90, a retired U.S. Air Force service man, died Thursday, July 25, 2013 in Oxford. He was a member of Grenada VFW.

Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013 at Poplar Springs Cemetery with Newsome Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jettie Lee Black, and is survived by a daughter, Jettie Susan Blain, Spokane, Wa.; a son, Michael Black, Cleveland; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be made to Oxford Veteran’s Home.


Martha Rudell Huffstatler Wilder

Martha Rudell Huffstatler Wilder, age 85, passed peacefully from this life on August 5, 2013.  She was born November 5, 1927 in Union County, MS to the late James Arthur and Thella Rakestraw Huffstatler.  Martha was a seamstress for Big Yank in Water Valley, MS before working at Holly Automotive where she retired in 1991.  She was a member of Camp Ground Baptist Church and she loved sewing, cooking and spending time with her family.

Visitation will be held Thursday, August 8, 2013 from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 pm at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley, MS.  Funeral services will be held immediately following the visitation at 2:00 pm in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Bro. Joe Caldwell officiating.  Burial will be in the Pine Crest Cemetery in Water Valley with Rylee Sisk, Zack Sisk, Larry Wilder, Jr., Austin Robbins, Colton Robbins and Kyle Robbins serving as pallbearers.  Jamie McCammon, Dickey Green, Anderson Wilder and James Wilder will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Martha is survived by her daughters, Wanda Kerr of Tillatoba, MS, Mary Ann Liles of Bruce, MS, and Donna Sisk of Dahlonega, GA; her sons, Larry Wilder and Rocky Wilder both of Water Valley, MS; two brothers, Homer Huffstatler and Sonny Huffstatler both of Southaven, MS; three sisters, Lavern Evans and Juanita Clayton both of Southaven, MS and Betty Joe Cobb of New Albany, MS; fourteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Willie Holland Wilder; two sons, Tim “Bodie” Wilder and Mike Wilder; a brother, Billy Huffstatler; two sisters, Syble Caldwell and Frances Berryhill; and four grandchildren.

Steven Anthony Owen, 56, of Vardaman, died August 7, 2013 at Calhoun Health Services in Calhoun City. He was born August 16, 1956 in Miami, Fl., the son of Stanley Owen and Almeda Sue Breedlove Owen. He was a self-employed carpenter.

Visitation will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City. Survivors include four sons, Steven A. James Thomas Paschall

James Thomas Paschall, 82, died on Sunday, August 4, 2013, at his home in Savannah, GA.

The funeral service will be held Friday, August 9, 2013, at 11:00 A.M. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Oxford, MS with Bishop Shawn Telford officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service at the church beginning at 10:00 A.M. Burial follow in Sarepta Cemetery in Calhoun County.

Born in Tula, MS to the late Thomas and Gladys Paschall, Mr. Paschall was a pilot and crop duster by trade. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for over 40 years and was a wonderful father. Mr. Paschall served his country in the United States Navy as a Merchant Marine, cooking on a freighter. After retirement, he took a road trip through Alaska. He loved genealogy and researched his family history. He was the past President and board member of the Lafayette County Historical and Genealogical Society, which was formerly Skipwith. He was also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (University Greys #1803) and served as their camp historian and grave registrar. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Allen Paschall.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Lynn Trahan of Savannah, GA; a sister, Roma Jean Steward of Baltimore, MD; and one foster brother, Ronnie Green of Baltimore, MD, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In honor of Mr. Paschall’s service to his country, the flag of the United States Navy will be flown at Waller Funeral Home.

Dr. James Louis Hemphill

James Louis Hemphill, M.D., 72, passed away Friday, Aug. 2, 2013 at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital, Knoxville, Tn. He grew up in Bruce, Mississippi and graduated from Mississippi State University, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Alpha Epsion Delta Honorary Fraternity.

He received his medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical School, where he was a member of Phi Chi Professional Fraternity. He served his internship at Erlanger Baroness Hospital in Chattanooga. He did his residency at the University of Tennessee Hospital in Memphis.
He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps where he served as a surgeon for the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. He was the recipient of the Naval Medal of Commendation. Dr. Hemphill started his OB/GYN medical practice in Knoxville in 1971 and continued until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of the Tennessee Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Board of OB/GYN. He was a member of The South Central OB/GYN Society of which he served as president in 2001.

Dr. Hemphill was of a member of Saint John’s Cathedral and Cherokee Country Club. He was preceded in death by his father, Hubert Hemphill, and his mother, Gladys Hemphill Ingram, both of Bruce.
He survived by his wife, Martha Bacon Hemphill; two daughters, Martha Bentel Hemphill and Margaret Taylor Hemphill. He is also survived by his cousin Dr. James Lee Thorton of New Albany; and by his sister-in law Mary McGee and her husband John McGee of Lookout Mountain, Tn.  A memorial service will be held at Saint John’s Cathedral Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 at 4 p.m., followed by the receiving of friends in the Great Hall. Eleanor Leverette Evans

Eleanor Leverette Evans, age 86, died Friday, August 16, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS.  She was born April 29, 1927 in Duck Hill, MS to the late James Clifford and Lena Heath Leverette.  Eleanor was a member of First Baptist Church of Water Valley, MS and worked there for many years as a secretary.  She was later employed as a teller at Mechanics Bank of Water Valley until her retirement.  She dedicated most of her life to caring for her invalid daughter, Lee Ellen Evans until her death in 2003.  She enjoyed cooking and sewing, but her world revolved around her grandchildren.

Funeral services followed the visitation at 3:30 pm on Sunday, August 18, 2013 in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks, with Dr. Randy Bain officiating.  Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley with Jesse Leverette, Sid Leverette, Cliff Leverette, Lane Leverette, Eddy Creekmore, and Larry Evans serving as pallbearers.  Tommy White and Roy Bennett Stevens served as honorary pallbearers.

Eleanor is survived by her son, Dr. Frank Evans, Jr. and his wife, Sherry of Calhoun City, MS; three sisters, Jeanine Bradshaw of Jackson, MS, JoAnn Finn of Memphis, TN and Betty Minton of  Rutherford, TN; her brother, Jesse Leverette of Madison, MS; three grandchildren, Larry Howell Evans, Jennifer Leigh Evans Chandler and Taylor Brooke Evans; and two great grandchildren, Carson Creekmore and Peyton Chandler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Evans, Sr.; her daughter, Lee Ellen Evans; and her son, Larry Leverette Evans.

George D. Barber

George D. Barber, 80, died Monday, August 12, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS.

Born in Buffalo, NY, Mr. Barber had lived in the Oxford area 41 years. A retired Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Marine Corps, he had served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After leaving military life, he was a senior resident agent with the FBI for 20 years. Mr. Barber was active in scouting having been a Boy Scout, an Eagle Scout, an adult Scout leader, and on the Wood Badge Staff. Mr. Barber and his wife, Sheila A. Barber, had recently celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford, MS was in charge of local arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila A. Barber of Oxford, MS; two sons, Gary W. Barber of Bolivar, TN and Scott A. Barber of Harpenden, England; two daughters, Sherri A. Brown of Calhoun City, MS and Kimberlee A. Barber of Lavergne, TN; one brother, John L. Barber of Freemont, CA; 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

His parents, John L. and Kay V. Barber, and a son, David G. Barber, preceded Mr. Barber in death.

Syble Massey Brasher

Syble Massey Brasher, 89, of Bruce, died August 18, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North MS in Oxford. She was born July 6, 1924 in Merigold, the daughter of Truman Zack and Alpha Card Massey. She was a homemaker, member of Bruce First Baptist Church, and was a 1938 graduate of Bruce High School. She attended Jackson Commercial College.

Her visitation is tonight, Wednesday, from 5-8 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce. Her funeral service will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home chapel with Bro. Darrell Logan officiating and Bro. Daniel Hathorne assisting. Burial will be in Bruce Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Eugene Beachum, Scott Dunn, Ben Jenkins, Jesse Jenkins, Anders Lee, Billy Pomeroy and Michael Stevens.

Survivors include three daughters, Diane (Mike) Young, Bruce; Hilda (R.D.) Cline, Amory, and Janet (Ronald) Jenkins, Bruce; seven grandchildren, Reba Dunn, Carla Lee, Amy Beachum, Rachel Pomeroy, Sarah Stevens, Ben Jenkins and Jesse Jenkins; eight great grandchildren, Zachary Lee, Jaden Dunn, Reagan Lee, Jillian Dunn, Siera Lee, Eva Beachum, Simon Lee and Jonathan Beachum, and one brother, J. Thurman Massey, Bruce. She was the widow of Arvin Buford Brasher, and was also preceded in death by her brothers, Ernest, Hubert F. and Tack Massey.

Bennett Van York Jr.

Bennett Van York, Jr. passed away August 13, 2013, in Calhoun City. He was born August 26, 1965, in Memphis, to Dr. Bennett Van York and his wife, Nan Moore York. He grew up in Hattiesburg, and was a graduate of Hattiesburg High School and the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. Bennett was known for his brilliant mind and giving heart. A true gentleman and patriot, he was full of love for those less fortunate and in need. Bennett will be dearly missed by his wife, children, family and many faithful friends.

He worked in real estate development, and among many other projects, was instrumental in the development and operation of an outdoor advertising company and many self-storage projects. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hattiesburg.
Bennett was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.T. York, Derma, and Paul M. Moore, Sr., Calhoun City. He is survived by his wife, Victoria Hopper York, Chicago, IL; daughter, Mary Abigail York, Hattiesburg, whose mother is Sonia Smith York, Hattiesburg; son, Bennett Van York III, Chicago, IL; parents, Dr. and Mrs. Bennett Van York, Hattiesburg; grandmother, Mrs. Paul M. Moore, Sr., Calhoun City; sister, Susan Paige York, Santa Rosa Beach, FL; brother, John Tyler York, and his wife, Charlotte Sonnier York, Hattiesburg; nephew, Lars Thomas Losee and niece, Ella Nell Losee, Santa Rosa Beach, FL; niece, Anne Moore York, Hattiesburg; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral service was Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, Calhoun City. A Celebration of the Life of Bennett V. York, Jr. will be held on his 48th birthday, Monday, Aug. 26, 2013 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Canebrake Country Club, in Hattiesburg.

Robert “Bobby” Calvin Harrison, 67, of Big Creek, died August 21, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. He was born February 2, 1946 in Grenada. He was a self-employed upholsterer, and a member of Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, National Guard, and  Masonic Lodge #506. He was a founder and fire chief of Big Creek Fire Department. He was president and certified operator of Big Creek Water Association, and was a member of the Big Creek Board of Aldermen.

Visitation will be Thursday, from 5-8 p.m. at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City. His funeral service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jimmy Vance and Rev. Alan Dearing officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Big Creek. Pallbearers will be Sidney Weddle, Brad Weddle, Bronson Ganger, Blake McCuiston, Sonny Harrison and Taylor Harrison. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Big Creek and Calhoun City Fire Departments.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Thompson Harrison, big Creek; one daughter, Pam (Turner) Shaw, Slate Springs; one son, Robert Dee (Tatyana) Harrison, Big Creek; his mother, Julia Brown Harrison, Derma; two sisters, Marilyn (Sidney) Weddle, Slate Springs, and Brenda Genin, Calhoun City; two brothers, Nathan (Diane) Harrison, Calhoun City, and David Harrison, Chattanooga, Tn., and three grandchildren, Nicole Langford (Bronson) Ganger, Olga Harrison, and Calvin Dee Harrison. He was preceded in death by his father, Calvin Dee Harrison.

Clinton Elvis McGreger, 89, of Pittsboro, died  August 21, 2013 at his home. He was born September 26, 1923 in Calhoun County, the son of Clarence Newton and Maudie Murphree McGreger. He was a graduate of Vardaman High School, and an active member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer for many years. Making their home in the Rocky Mount community on the family farm, he was married to Cela Mitchell for 70 years. A farmer by profession, he had a love for the land and for his farm.

Visitation will be Friday from 5-9 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce. His funeral service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Rocky Mount Baptist Church in Pittsboro with Bro. Larry Haggard and Bro. Clovis Logan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lowell Bryant, Scott Collins, J.C. Haire, Sid Haire, Nathan McGreger, Nick McGreger, Jerry Murphree and Jamie Sims.

Survivors include his wife, Cela Mitchell McGreger, Pittsboro; one daughter, Sandra (Tommy) Rogers, Tupelo; one son, Mitch (Christy) McGreger, Bruce; one sister, Moss Green, Bruce; four grandchildren, Jamie (Evelyn) Sims, Amanda (Brandon) Beckett, Nathan (Angela) McGreger, Nicholas (Chelsea) McGreger; three step-grandchildren, Chad (Ann) Rogers, Brad (Meadow) Rogers, Haley Williams, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Audie Burt, Beatrice Haire and Birtis Bryant. Also preceded in death by a brother, Buel McGreger.

Montise Coleman, 91, of Bruce, died August 21, 2013 at Golden Living Center in Eupora. She was born April 25, 1922 in Calhoun County, the daughter of Isaac Bose Coleman and Ola Melton Coleman. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Visitation will be Saturday from noon until 2 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce. The graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. at Haven Hill Cemetery in Coffeeville with Bro. James Taylor officiating.

Survivors include one sister, Annie Williams, Pontotoc; two brothers, Carl Coleman, Pontotoc, and Woodrow Coleman, Ocean Springs, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Dr. Herbert Wayne Gregory

Dr. Herbert Wayne Gregory passed away at his home Sunday, August 25, 2013, with his family by his side.  He is pre-deceased by his parents, Leonard Curtis and Leona Wagner Gregory and one brother, James Edward Gregory. Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years, Jeannette Spainhour Gregory; children, Dr. Wayne Porter Gregory, Portland, OR; Richard and Anne Gregory Authement, Ponchatoula, LA. Terri Gouedy Gregory, Monmouth, OR; two brothers, Leroy C. Gregory, Loudon, TN., and Lanny L. Gregory, Gallatin, TN.; also, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, four nieces, and one nephew.

He was raised in Calhoun City.  He received advanced degrees from the University of Mississippi, and devoted his life to the advancement of the teaching profession. He worked with  NCATE and SASC in evaluating and improving the  profession of teaching in public schools and  colleges.
He served in the 8th Air Force in WWII and retired from Southeastern Louisiana University as Professor Emeritus, Department of Student Teaching. A highlight of his tenure there was his involvement in the planning and construction of the innovative Teacher Education Center,  which incorporated the Lab School and education offices. During his years in Hammond, he was a deacon at two Baptist churches, active in  the Rotary Club, and grew roses that he shared with the community.

Following retirement, Dr. and Mrs. Gregory have resided in Black Mountain, NC for the past 20 years. He has served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Black Mountain, on the Board of Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries, and as a volunteer at the Black Mountain Welcome Center.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 27,  1 p.m., at the First Baptist Church of Black Mountain. The family will receive friends from 12  to 1 p.m. Rev. Dr. David Rayburn will officiate. Harwood Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements. www.harwoodhomeforfunerals.com
