Elizabeth Ann Burke Kennedy died July 15, 2020 at HOPE Memory Care Center in Dacula, Ga.  She was born in Calhoun County on December 19, 1938 to Owen Jackson and Cansie Ola Harrelson Burke.

She was a graduate of Big Creek High School and Northwest Community College with an AA degree in Business.  On August 23, 1958 she married the love of her life, Wayne Kennedy, and they enjoyed 61 years of marriage. They had two children, son Phillip (Phil) Wayne and daughter, Judy Elizabeth.

Although she  was a wonderful wife, mother and housewife, she enjoyed working outside the home. One of her favorite and most rewarding jobs was working in the church office at First Baptist Church of Merritt Island, Fl. as the Educational Secretary with Dr. Adrian P. Rogers, pastor there from 1964-1972. She also worked at Weyerhaeuser Company, a timberland company, in Federal Way, WA for more than 28 years, and retired as the Marine Insurance Manager.  Part of her responsibilities with Weyerhaeuser involved travel to several countries in Europe to train employees and to coordinate Insurance Coverage for cargo ships.

Shopping and decorating her home were her favorite activities. She had many opportunities to decorate since her husband’s career required them to move numerous times over the years.

She was a member of Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula, Ga., where she was a leader in her Sunday School class and worked in the Widow Ministry until she developed health problems.

She is survived by her loving and devoted family, husband, Wayne Edward Kennedy, Hoschton, GA; son, Phillip Wayne (Susan) Kennedy, Carlsbad, CA; daughter, Judy Kennedy (Mark) Lanham, Dacula, GA; beloved grandson, Cole Kennedy Lanham, Dacula, GA and extended family members in Calhoun County.

He loved the outdoors, and enjoyed hunting and fishing, but one of his greatest joys was his garden. He had what most people would say was a “green thumb”. There was rarely ever a time he did not have a beautiful garden with more than enough vegetables for his family as well as many others in the community. He loved Mississippi State Bulldogs and was always watching or listening to every game regardless of the sport. He also loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports or whatever activity they were involved in. If you knew him, you could always expect to be teased, as this was a favorite thing for him to do. The love he shared with his family and the big smile he always had on his face will be missed greatly. He was one of a kind and could never be replaced.

James C. ‘Jim’ Pullen

James C. “Jim” Pullen left this world for the next on Sunday, July 26.

He was born January 25, 1936, in a log cabin in Big Creek. He moved to Knoxville as a very young man and, after a short stint at Wolfe Dairy, began his first career as the Sunbeam bread man, first in the UT area and then in Sevierville. He was a familiar presence in Sevierville, and often accompanied on the bread truck by one of his two sons, Jimmy or Mark. After retiring from Swan’s Bakery, he started his second career with Sevier County Highway Department, one that he loved until his health required him to retire for the second and final time.

Jim married Mary Lou Oxendine on September 20, 1952. They had three children and in their later years enjoyed RV travel. Jim lost Mary after 61 years of marriage.

He never met a stranger, and as his son-in-law Michael often said, “He was someone who would get on an elevator with a group of strangers, and get off with all new friends.”  On his bulletin board, he had the following quote from John Wesley, “Do all the good you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can, for as long as you can.” He followed that advice for as long as he could.

He is survived by his daughter Janet, her husband Michael Kolarik, their daughter Annie Kolarik and her husband Sam Kershaw; his son James M. “Jim” Pullen, his wife Teresa, children Shandy Justus, Ryan Williamson, and Jimmy Lee Pullen, and his son T. Mark Pullen. He is also survived by too many friends to name or count.

Memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church, 317 Parkway, Sevierville, TN 37862.

Services will be private. Online condolences may be made at www.atchleyfuneralhome.com

Dr. John Goudelock

Dr. John Clifton Goudelock of Myrtle passed away July 25 due to complications related to COVID-19. He was born July 22, 1943 in Bruce, to Dr. Leander and Burma Miller Goudelock. He graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1967. In July of 1968, he was inducted into the U.S. Army Medical Corps at the rank of Captain. He was immediately thrust into the chaos of South Vietnam where he was forced to teach himself advanced surgical techniques. Many times, his patients were young children and simple, rural farmers whose bodies had been mutilated and mangled by weapons of modern warfare and in a country where modern medicine and medical techniques simply did not exist. He used innovative procedures that allowed his patients to continue a productive life oftentimes after catastrophic bodily injuries. His primary goal was to give them the capacity to capably continue their daily lives. He returned from the war to do his surgical residency in Greenville, SC and went on to continue his specialization in neurosurgery. The humanitarian calling to help mankind brought him back to Mississippi. He practiced medicine in Mississippi, Beverly Hills, CA and Texas. After his retirement, to continue his passion in serving others he worked tirelessly for many years to establish at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine an endowment with the purpose of establishing a hand surgery center.

In spite of his many accomplishments, he was a man of little pretense and was not one to put on airs. Those who knew him best were familiar with his wit and downright devilish antics. Whether he was letting the dogs lick his mother’s fine china clean or putting a snakeskin under the crack beneath the door of the tenant house across the road (headed in not out, by the way). His shenanigans, the likes of which will never be seen again and never be forgotten.

Unfortunately, very few people knew the soft tender-hearted side of John. He reserved his tenderness for a very select few. If you were lucky enough to find yourself within this group, you know you were blessed.

He is survived by his children, Robert (Khan) Goudelock, Laura (Scott) Dunnam, Margaret Goudelock, and his wife Mary. He was “Grandaddy” to Bryan, Miller, Elise Dunnam, Gunner and Thien An Goudelock, and Lydia and Carys Napier. He is also survived by his sister Ann Vance and brother Jim Goudelock.

A graveside service was Wednesday at Mt. Olivet Cemetery with United Funeral Service in charge of arrangements

Donations may be made to the John C. Goudelock Hand Surgery Center Endowment, University of Mississippi Foundation P.O. Box 249 38677.
