Ruby Helen Holloway Curington, 95, a resident of Alva, passed away peacefully September 18, 2019 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Calhoun City. Born November 7, 1923 in Calhoun County, she was the daughter of Joseph Holloway, Sr. and Doshie Virginia Harrelson Holloway. She was a member of Alva Baptist Church and a retired J.A. Olsen employee. She was first and foremost a child of our sweet Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. No one was ever the same after meeting her. You were immediately taken with her beautiful smile, bright eyes, and loving spirit.
She was never afraid to speak her mind and could assess your character from the git go. She was always and forever gracious enough to let others errs be forgiven and most of the time forgotten. She seemed to have an unspoken language that was shared only with her baby boy.
She could shake her fist at you one minute and give you kisses and hugs the next and always said, “I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.”
Even as a child she had a compassionate heart. When she and her seven siblings found a bird nest high in the tree, she climbed the tree with a sister on her back so the little one could see. She could make the best purple hull peas and chocolate fudge in the world.
She made a home and worked a strenuous job every day for many years, all while raising three boys. She was a hard worker all of her life and saw many hardships and losses over her 95 years on this earth, but would be the first to tell you how blessed she was. She saw the first telephone and all the way to facetiming her grandson on a smart phone and adapted to it all with grace.
She loved Jesus, old Westerns, Dancing with the Stars, mustard greens, neckbones, homemade tomato soup, lemon slushes, beautiful sunny days, happy laughing grandbabies, friends and family.
Some may remember the way her eyes lit up each time she would tell the story of her little granddaughter singing Reba McIntyre on the coffee table or when her very special nephew thought the restaurant “Ruby Tuesday” was actually hers.
On the subtle or maybe not so subtle way she persuaded her husband (Papaw) to take the children on a tractor ride, even though he insisted his dinner” needed to settle” first.
She was a teenage bride in the 40s who left her home and family to join Papaw in the service, and a feisty little spit fire in her 90s shooting critters off the front porch in the middle of the night.
We give God the honor, praise and the glory for placing this beautiful lady into our lives and hearts and for helping her to leave us with a love for God. Strong will, strength of character, spark, spunk, and grace these will surely be her legacy that will live on through her family and friends. Our love and appreciation will never fade in our hearts.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held Friday, September 20, 2019, at 10:00am at Pryor Funeral Home. There will also be a visitation on Friday from 9:00am until service time at the funeral home. Bro. Terry Corley will be officiating. Interment will follow at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Webster County.
Pallbearers will be Bill Curington, Mac Curington, Trey Curington, Jacob Curington, Daniel Farmer, and Michael Ray.
She leaves behind her son, Forrest Curington and wife Patricia of Winona; two sisters, Robbie Sue Hubbard of Calhoun City, Velma Evans of Leon, IA; 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren and one on the way; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Doshia Harrelson Holloway; husband of 65 years Bryant Shaw Curington, Sr.; two sons, Bryant Shaw Curington, Jr. and Joseph Thomas Curington; and five brothers, Gilbert Holloway, Hurchel Holloway, Robert Earl Holloway, J.C. Holloway, and Winfred Holloway.
