Betty Cox

Betty Quay Cofer Cox, 76, passed away peacefully to be with her Lord  Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, in Oxford.  She was born in Banner,  November 8, 1937 to the late J.H. and Gatha Potts Cofer. A member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oxford, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She never met a stranger and opened her home to many. Her pastimes included sewing, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, reading and Bingo. In her early years, she began the first all women’s softball team in the area. Her team won the season championship. She had many accomplishments that included having a cameo part in “The Gun in Betty Lou’s Handbag” and an extra in “The Heart of Dixie,’ performing the gospel with her siblings, and visiting many national land marks.

The funeral service will be  Thursday, Oct. 16, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Hope and Rev. Brad Burnett officiating. Burial will follow in Turkey Creek Cemetery in Calhoun County. Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 15,   from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest L. Cox and her son, Vergil Belden Cox. She is survived by Charles Ray Cox, son; Jakeeta Joy (Joseph) Legge, daughter; Sareeta Jan (Gerald) Legge; daughter, Paquita Jean (Mark) DeBerry, daughter; Ronald Christopher (Laura) Cox, son, and Anthony Scott (Ashley) Cox, son; 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Her siblings include Lois Gilmer, Eugene (Bill) Cofer, Patsy Pendergrass, Bobby Cofer and the late James (Jim) Cofer and Vergie Campbell. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center, 40 North Dunlap, Memphis, TN 38103-9984.
