J.D. Burns of Grenada, died March 31, 2015. He was born July 23, 1947, to Earnest Burns Sr. and Natha Lee Gordon Burns. He joined Sabougla M.B. Church at an early age. After graduating from South Calhoun High School in 1967, he moved to Tupelo. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1969. After serving in the Army, he continued his military service in the MS National Guard. He retired from Luvata (formerly McQuay and Heatcraft) after 37 years of employment.
He was an avid coon, deer and squirrel hunter. He even took his young daughter, Priscilla, to some local Coon Hunters’ Association hunts when he didn’t have dogs running. For many years he was a member of Pleasant Grove Hunting Club. He also enjoyed spending time fishing. Later in life, he put aside these activities, and after retirement just enjoyed a leisurely day sitting on his porch and gardening. Survivors include his wife since February 1971, Lula Mae Hubbard, and daughter, Priscilla, both of Grenada; three brothers, Earnest Jr. (Rena), Frank (Mary), and Geams Earl, all of Calhoun City; one sister, Mollie Ree Burns Conley, Gore Springs; three nephews who were more like brothers, Willie Ray Woodard and Willie James Woodard, both of Flint, Mi. and Ernest Lee Woodard, Sun City, Ca.; nieces, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elvie Burns Woodard Richardson. His funeral service was April 11 at 11 a.m at Friendship M.B. Church in Calhoun City with Dr. Tracy Foxx officiating. Burial was in Friendship M.B. Church Cemetery in Calhoun City. Pallbearers were Earnest Lee Burns, Jimmy Dale Tedford, Cordarius Tedford, Wesley Fortenberry, Steve McCain, Will O’Bannon, and honorary pallbearers were Willie Ray Woodard, Earnest Lee Woodard, James Woodard, Dennis Tillman, Johnny Wayne Hubbard and James D. Hubbard. Clark-Williams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
