Bryce Clinton Ruth, Sr., 94, of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Indywood Estates. He was born in Pittsboro, on May 28, 1920, to Barney Edward Ruth and Sara Elizabeth Armstrong Ruth. He proudly served the United States Army during WWII, where he became a Purple Heart recipient for his actions as a forward observer in Northern Africa and Italy. Visitation will be 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2015, at Ray Funeral Home. Graveside services will immediately follow, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2015, at Lehrton Cemetery in Ruleville with Rev. Will Wilkerson officiating. Interment will be in Lehrton Cemetery. On February 14, 1948, he married Mary Kathryn Arant in Greenwood, MS. He worked at The Mississippi State Penitentiary as a Director of Records for 34 years, and he retired as Chairman of the Mississippi Parole Board. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cleveland, Order of the Purple Heart, Veteran’s of Foreign War, American Legion, Ruleville Rotary Club, and Farm Bureau. He is preceded in death by his parents, Barney Edward Ruth and Sara Elizabeth Armstrong Ruth; step-mother, Flossie B. Ruth; son, Bryce Clinton Ruth, Jr.; sisters, Lorene Burris, Delphia Inman and Glennie Harrelson; brothers, Dale Ruth and Dwight Ruth. J. Fred Burke, 98, died Monday, February 2, 2015 at Golden Age Nursing Home of Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born on January 5, 1917 in Calhoun County, MS to the late William and Mae Seale Burke. He was a charter member of North Greenwood Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and taught the 10 year old boys’ Sunday School Class for many years. He attended Delta State and taught school before serving in World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Bronze Star. He and his wife Mary Alice moved to Greenwood after the war and he was retired District Manager for United Insurance Company. He was a longstanding member and President of the Greenwood Lions Club. Services will be held 11a.m. Saturday February 7, 2015 at North Greenwood Baptist Church in Greenwood, MS. Barbara Sue Murk, 72, of Bruce, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at her residence. Born April 19, 1942 in Ethel, she was the daughter of the late Marvin Moorhead and the late Belva Shoemaker Moorhead. Jimmy Curtis Luther, 67, of Houlka, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Born Saturday, February 22, 1947 in Calhoun County, he was the son of the late William C. “Bill” Luther and the late Mary McDonald Luther. He was retired from the U.S. Army National Guard after serving 43 years, from 1966 until 2009. He was a member of Cooke Memorial Baptist Church.

Wendell Smith
Wendell ‘Dale’ Smith, 57, of Tuscaloosa County, Al., and formerly of Bruce, died January 31, 2015. He was born April 20, 1957 in Pittsboro, the son of Frances Jean Lee Petty. He accepted Christ early in his life and was baptized. He began working for the Weyerhaeuser Company during his junior year in high school. He graduated from Bruce High School in 1976 and joined the Army National Guard. After being united in holy matrimony to Annie Kaye Bean, the couple moved to Columbus, where he continued to work for Weyerhaeuser and serve in the National Guard. The marriage produced two daughters. His interests included family vacations, hunting, fishing, hiking, weightlifting, and amateur photography.
He leaves fond and precious memories to his loving and devoted wife, Annie Smith, Tuscaloosa County, Al.; three daughters, Cassandria Dell Smith, Tuscaloosa County, Al.; Erica Darcel Smith (Douglas Marsh) of Atlanta, Ga., and Shawnette Radell Williams, Zion, Il.; mother, Frances Jean Petty, Big Creek; step-father, L.J. Bonnie Sue Bray
Bonnie Sue Bray, 67, of Bruce, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at Calhoun Health Services Hospital in Calhoun City after a brief illness as a result of a longtime battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Born January 13, 1948 in Vardaman, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Cook and the late Virginia McGee Cook. She was married to Jimmy W. Bray for nearly 49 years, having wed June 10, 1966. She was a longtime farmer’s wife and member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was a loving homemaker.
She leaves behind her loving husband, Jimmy; her son, Darrell W. Bray, Houlka; her daughter, Amanda B. (Robert Rae) Powell, San Antonio, Tx; her brother, Doug Cook; her aunts and uncle, Christine Bailey, and Paul and Daphna Cook, all of Vardaman. She is preceded in death by her parents and younger sister, Kay.

Lavina Maye Wade, 76 of Derma, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at home. Born June 27, 1938 in Cherry Valley, Ar., she was the daughter of the late Alvin Shahan and Maye Ellen Coates Shahan. She graduated high school in Wynne, Ar. She was the widow of the late Charles Wayne Wade, also preceded in death by grandson Scott Wade.

Velma Gregory, 90, of Pontotoc, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at Pontotoc Health & Rehab Center in Pontotoc. Wilma Kathryn “Maw” Melton Morrow, 89, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2015 at the home of her daughter, Nancy Miller, in Oxford. Born in Carroll County, she grew up in Coffeeville, lived in Bruce and Batesville before settling in the Oxford area. Known to many as “Maw”, she was a homemaker who loved her children and grandchildren, but babies, especially. She enjoyed sewing, flowers (particularly roses), fishing and being outdoors. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Coffeeville.
Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until noon at New Hope Baptist Church, 1890 CR 80 in Coffeeville with funeral services following at noon at the church. Bro. Johnny Hearn will officiate. Thomas Leon “Tripp” Macon III, 16, of Calhoun City died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015 in Big Creek. He was born October 6, 1998 in Grenada, the son of Thomas Leon “Tom” Macon, Jr. and Julia Ann Williams Macon. He was a sophomore at Calhoun City High School, member of the Beta Club, football team, and weight lifting team of Calhoun City High School, and a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Slate Springs.

The funeral service will be Wednesday, Mar., 4, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. at Calhoun City High School gymnasium in Calhoun City, with Bro. Kenneth Armstrong and Bro. Anthony Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Old Bethany Cemetery in Slate Springs. Pallbearers will be Alan Woodcock, Avery Woodcock, Justin Schiele, T.J. Schiele, Tyler Toole, J.B. Willingham, Garrett Lucius and Dakota King. Honorary pallbearers are Clay Wade, Katlin Doler, Hunter Harris, Evan Parker and Preston Cole. Pryor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his parents, Thomas Leon “Tom” Macon, Jr. and Julia Ann Williams Macon; one sister, Anna Grace Macon; one brother, Jake Garett Macon, all of Calhoun City; grandparents, T.J. and Carol Williams, Webb; Lynn & Martha Rodgers, Calhoun City. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jess W. Macon, and grandfather, Thomas Leon Macon, Sr.

Vic Ellard
Victor Hugo Ellard Jr., 91, of Pittsboro died Friday, Feb. 27, 2015 at Select Specialty Hospital in San Antonio, TX. He was born in Dawson, New Mexico on September 24, 1923, to Victor Hugo Ellard, Sr. and Ivy Lee Byars Ellard. He was a veteran of WW2, having served in the 8th Air Force of the Army Air Corps in England from 1943-1945. He had been a lifelong member of the Pittsboro United Methodist Church.
He is survived by two sons, Jerome (Helen) Ellard, Big Sandy, TX and Gregory (Theresa) Ellard, Windcrest, TX; eight grandchildren (Erin, Rory, Celina, Andrew, Theresa Marie, Angela, Kristopher, Alan); 11 great-grandchildren (Raven, Piper, Michael, Brandon, Evan, Alex, Michael William, Daniel, Catie, Andrew James, Brianna); a brother, Bruce (Catherine) Ellard, Natchez; nieces, nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sydnette, and his brother, John. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
How to condense 91 years of experiences and impact on other people into a few lines? Vic was known and loved by family and friends all around the country. He enjoyed promoting and attending gatherings (small or large) of family and friends and loved each person well. He was a prolific letter writer, and had many stories, mostly funny, about growing up in Depression-era Mississippi. He maintained a keen interest in world and national affairs and passed on that interest to his sons. After a time as a civilian employee at Columbus Air Force Base, he moved to Mission, in deep south Texas in 1954 to work in the same capacity at Moore Air Base. He raised his family and lived in Texas for almost 30 years before moving back to Pittsboro. His passing leaves a void, but a full and unforgettable legacy of love.
Shelia Nelson
Sheila Gregory Nelson, 51, died Sunday, March 1, 2015 surrounded by her loving family at her home in Water Valley, after a long battle with breast cancer. She was born September 21, 1963 in Bruce, to Carolyn Hodge and the late Jimmy “Butch” Gregory. She was a member of New El Bethel Baptist Church, and a former Girl Scout leader. She loved riding motorcycles and was an active member of the Lake Trash Charity Riders where she served as First Lady. She enjoyed working in her yard, working with her flowers, gardening and taking care of her dog, Willie, whom she affectionately called her “fourth child”. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking large meals for all her family and friends. She loved everyone, and all who knew her, loved her. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and loved spending time with her family and friends.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 4, 2015 from 5-7 p.m. at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Chaplain Wayne Harlow and Pastor Bill Rutledge officiating. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery in Yalobusha County with Steven Langham, Howard Brower, Craig Stewart, Robert Winters, Steve Baker, Paul Ferguson and Danny “Dink” Perry serving as pallbearers.
She is survived by her husband, Terry Nelson, Water Valley; two daughters, Sarah Nelson and Kristie Nelson, both of Water Valley; her son, Steven Brock Langham, Water Valley; her mother, Carolyn (Kenneth) Hodge, Oxford; her sister, Beverly (Blake) Giles, Oxford; her brother, Jimmy “Roe” Gregory, Oxford; her grandmother, Janet Kirby, Calhoun City, and one grandson, Bryson Wayne Nelson, Water Valley. She was preceded in death by her father, Jimmy “Butch” Gregory; her grandparents, Jimmy and Jonnie Gregory and her grandfather, Leroy Kirby.
Martha Suggs
Funeral services for Martha Suggs, 80 of Murchison were February 12, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel with Bro. Eddie Marsh and Bro. Rick Griffin officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park.
She passed away February 8, 2015 in Friendswood. She was born January 10, 1935 in Calhoun County, to Aaron Ellis and Ada Mae McCormick Peden. She had resided in Murchison since 1972, and was married to the late James Suggs for 50 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Brownsboro and the Women’s Missionary Auxillary of Opelika Missionary Baptist Church. She loved sewing, quilting, crocheting and gardening. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Survivors include her son James (Gale) Suggs, Chandler; daughter, Patsy Monk, Tyler; grandchildren, James Nelson (Kassy) Suggs, Frankston, Melinda (Robert) Payne, Friendswood; Sarah Neal, Murchison; Katy Monk, Tyler; Jesse Monk, Tyler; Matthew (Sara) Suggs, Chandler; Andrew Suggs and Hailey Suggs, both of Chandler; great grandchildren, Rainy Payne and Jackson Payne, Friendswood; James Nelson Suggs IV, Frankston; Henry Suggs, Jack Suggs, Kash Suggs, all of Frankston; Eric Suggs, Chandler; sisters Pauline and James Coston, Gulf Port; Linda and Gary Aldridge, Olive Branch,and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; sisters, Ruth Griffin, Eunice Peden, Nina Pearl Gregory and son, Alexander Dewayne Suggs.
Pallbearers were James Nelson Suggs III, Matthew Lamar Suggs, Andrew Logan Suggs, James Nelson Suggs IV, Jesse Allan Monk, Robert Edward Payne, Jackson Montgomery Payne, Henry Cole Suggs. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Nolan Suggs, Kash Ryan Suggs and Eric Lamar Suggs.
