William Denley

The family of William Pluett Denley wishes to announce the passing of his life from this earth to the greater glory of Heaven. Although it is with heavy hearts that they say goodbye to him, they are also joyful that he is now pain free and with the Lord. He passed from this life at 7:05 p.m. on March 2, 2015 at the Veterans Nursing Home in Oxford. He received excellent care while there from the devoted nursing staff on B Wing and also later from Community Care. His roommate, Darnell Howe, was a friend and former coworker. He worked for Bruce Timber Company, Weyerhaeuser, Lyons in Grenada, plus 35 years for the MS Forestry Commission. He had been retired for a number of years.

Visitation will be Friday, March 6, 2015 from 9-11 a.m. at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City. The funeral service will be Friday at 11 at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel in Calhoun City with Bro. Wayne Gullett officiating.  Burial will be in Pittsboro Cemetery with Pryor Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his daughters, Johnnye Denley Hughes and her husband, Larry, who devoted loving years to his care, of Water Valley, and Cathy Denley Nichols and husband, Paul, Pontotoc; two grandsons, Jason D. Hughes and wife, Candace, Water Valley; and Lt. Col. Paul Sheldon Nichols and wife Phakawan “Eve”, Toyoko, Japan; two great-granddaughters, Kimberley and Brittany Hughes, Water Valley; one great-great-granddaughter, plus a wonderful host of nieces and nephews and their children.

He was preceded in death by his loving and wonderful wife, Noble James Denley on February 29, 2012, his parents, Jack and Beadie Shankles Denley, his sister, Elizabeth “Beth” Denley, and aunt Dona Shankles Austin.

Dorothy Corrine Keen, 82 of Bruce, died Monday, March 2, 2015 at St. Frances Hospital in Memphis. She was born November 11, 1932 in Oxford. She was the daughter of the late Edward Parker and Francis Lausie Moore Parker. She was the wife of the late Van Keen. She was a professional seamstress, retired from Glenn Slacks Garment Factory and a member of First Baptist Church in Bruce. She is survived by daughters, Deborah Crutchfield,  Memphis; Dianne Black, Marks; Brenda (Sammy) Bradley, Hattiesburg; Carolyn (Sput) Deaton, Bruce; Donna Keen, Hattiesburg; Sally Camponovo, Shelby; one son, Henry Keen, Holly Springs,  and brother, Charles (Sonny) Parker; sisters, Mary Ellis and Nita Turner; 18 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She was preceded also by a brother, Lewis Edward “Monk” Parker and a sister, Barbara Rogers. Visitation Saturday, March 7 at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce from 10-11. Funeral service will be  at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel with Bro. George Steward and Dr. Daniel Hathorne officiating. Pallbearers will be Joey Black, Garrett Bradley, Van Camponovo, Casey Deaton, Michael Englade, Nathan Englade, Timmy Jenkins and Jessie Keen. Burial will be in Memorial Garden Cemetery, Clarksdale, Saturday at 3 p.m.

Sarah Jane Blount, 59, Bruce, died Wednesday, Mar. 4, 2015, at Sanctuary Hospice House in

Tupelo. Born November 23, 1955 in Grenada,  she was the daughter of the late Charles Melton and

Mayford Bumgart Melton. She was the wife of Alvin Blount. She was employed by Haworth Inc. in Bruce and was a member of Lantrip Baptist Church.

Surviving are son, Jeremy Blount, Nashville; brothers, Charles

Steven Melton, Vardaman,  and Ricky

Lynn Melton, Bruce.

Her funeral service will be at Saturday at 2 p.m. at Parker Memorial

Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Robert Earl

Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Garden in

Calhoun City.

The family will receive friends Friday from 5-8 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral

Home in Bruce.

Rebecca “Becky” Lynn Chrestman Murphree, 59, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at her home in Lafayette County, MS. Born in Calhoun County to the late Jimmy Chrestman and Ruth Inez Alford, she was a legal assistant at Tannehill, Carmean and McKenzie, PLLC in Oxford. She was a member of Anchor Baptist Church where she attended the Grace Sunday School Class, and formerly taught a Bible study class and assisted with children’s church. She loved her scrapbooking club, reading and cross stitch. She enjoyed playing and spending time with her grandchildren.  Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Chrestman.The funeral service will be Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Gerald Shook and Rev. Ken Hanks officiating. Burial will follow with a graveside service at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Calhoun County. Visitation will be Friday evening, March 6, from 4-7 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home.
Becky is survived by her daughter, Lindsay Murphree (Joey) Hastings, Bruce; a son, Jason Lee Murphree, Oxford; two brothers, Mike (Sonia) Alford, Tupelo, and Bobby (Dianna) Chrestman, Pontiac, IL; four sisters, Mary (Jody) Bowker, Anchorage, AK; Terry West, Washington State;  Reba (Paul) Ward, Big Creek; Noelle Chrestman, Hawaii, and two grandchildren, Collin and Riley Hastings, Bruce.

Nina Jo Lindsey McMahan, 85, of Tyler, Tx. (formerly of Calhoun City) died Monday, March 2, 2015 at her home in Tyler, Tx.  She was born November 23, 1929 in Banner, the daughter of Boyce Lindsey and Addie Chole Riley McMahan. Most may remember her from her tenure at The Yellow Rose Fish House and as owner of Jo’s Frosty Bar where she served for a combined total of many, many years.She was a retired store owner and member of Friendly Baptist Church in Tyler. She was very active in the Ladies Home League sponsored by The Salvation Army in Tyler. She attended weekly and enjoyed arts and crafts, Bingo, games and fellowship with other seniors, along with Bible Study and lunch. She was concerned about the funding of the program and it would be an honor to contribute in her names to help keep it going.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 1 p.m. until time of her funeral service at 3 p.m. at Clear Springs Baptist Church in Yalobusha County. Bro. Roger Reeder will be officiating and burial will in the church cemetery. Pryor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Charles Dean Parker, 73, of Vardaman, died Thursday, March 5, 2015 at North MS Medical Center in Tupelo.  He was born September 13, 1941 in Vardaman, the son of Earnest Parker and Elizabeth Ward Parker. He was a retired milk deliveryman for Avents and was a member of New Liberty Baptist Church.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 5-7 p.m. at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City.  The funeral service will be Sunday, March 8 at 2 p.m. at New Liberty Baptist Church in Vardaman with Bro. Jeff Harmon officiating. Burial will be in New Liberty Cemetery in Vardaman. Pryor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers are Jimmy Parker, Ricky Parker, Ronald Parker, Bryan Allen Long, Bub Long, Steve Long, Donnie Smith and Tony Langford. Honorary pallbearers are his domino playing friends.

Theodis Moore

Brother Theodis Moore (81) was born January 1, 1934 in Chickasaw County to the late  Venella Thompson and the late Alexander Moore, Jr.  Bro. Theodis exchanged earthly life for eternal life on February 23, 2015 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

He was a faithful member of Porters Chapel A.M.E. Church in Calhoun City where he served as a deacon and in many other capacities during his membership at the church.  He was married to Sis. Cleo Fox Moore for over 56 years and resided in Calhoun City.

He is preceded in death by his mother, father, and step-father, E.O. Thompson; four sisters, Cora Moore, Betty Jean Edmond, Ora Bell Stephens and Dorothy Jean Pratt; two brothers, Richard Moore and Alexander Moore, Jr., and two daughter Faye and Sheila Moore.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Cleo, and six children, Maelean Moore, Bruce; Johnnie (Earl) Edmond, Judy (Bozzie) Edwards, Janice (Willie) Gates, Odis Moore and Renaldo Moore, all of Calhoun City; two special daughter/grand-daughters, Calina (Demetris) Patterson, Tupelo, and Sherrie (Joe) Powell, Calhoun City; six sisters, Ruthie White, Minnie Galloway, Bobbie Sue Armstrong, Helen Taylor, Betty Moore, Evelyn Johnson,  and six brothers, Johnny Moore, Raymond Moore, Angelo Moore, Jimmy Moore, Henry Moore, Johnny Mack Hamilton, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Phillip Bruce Yarbrough, 56, of Bruce, died Saturday, Mar. 7, 2015, at Community Hospice House in Verona. Born November 4, 1958 in Water Valley, he was the son of Samuel Yarbrough and the late Mary  Harmon Yarbrough. He was a member of Bruce First Baptist Church serving as a deacon, and president of the F.B.C. Creative Learning Center.

Surviving are his wife, Vickie Hellums Yarbrough; daughters, Lauren Tutor, Bruce; Leslie Harris, Bruce, and Alayna (Ryan) Keeton, Pelahatchie; brothers, Steve (Terry) Yarbrough, Paris; Mark (Annette) Yarbrough, Oxford; Scott (Donna) Yarbrough, Oxford, and Dave (Linda) Yarbrough, Rienzi; sister, Milinda McCord, Paris; grandchildren, Camryn, Channing, Chelsie, Jace, Lilly Kate, Mary Elise, Ava, and baby Keeton.

His funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Dr.  Daniel Hathorne officiating. Interment will be in Memory Memorial Gardens in Bruce.

Malinece Allen, 86, died Saturday, March 7, 2015, at her home in Eupora. Born in Choctaw County, she was a member of Wood Springs Baptist Church. She worked at Wells Lamont Mfg. for 45 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix Allen.

Funeral services were Monday at 2 p.m.  at Wood Springs Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery in Choctaw County. Rev. Dale Strickland and Rev. Lanny Collum officiated.

Survivors include her son, Edwin (Carolyn) Allen, Eupora; grandchildren, Shane Allen, Robert Allen, Laura Threet; great grandchildren, Landon Allen, Kolton Parker, Will Asbury, and great great grandchild, Kyndal Parker.

Pallbearers were Shane Allen, Robert Allen, Jason Threet, Greg Dean, Bill Dean, Tony Crimm. Honorary pallbearers were Will Asbury and Landon Allen.

Mattie Teresa “Sissie” Anderson Dugan, 60, of Big Creek, died Saturday, Mar. 7, 2015 at Merit Health Central in Jackson. She was born March 15, 1954 in Calhoun County, the daughter of Neal Anderson and Marion Lollar Anderson. She was a retired beautician and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Mar. 10 from noon until service time at 2 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church in Big Creek. Bro.Mark Longino will be officiating and burial will Mt. Nebo Cemetery in Big Creek. Quinette Webster Lowe, 84, of Vardaman, died Friday, Mar. 6, 2015, at Bruce Community Living Center. Born September 23, 1930 in Vardaman, she was the daughter of the late Noah Jenkins and the late Louella Vandlandingham Jenkins. She was the wife of the late Marty Webster. She was a member of Vardaman First Baptist Church. 

Surviving are son, Clovis Webster, Byhalia; daughters, Nancy (Bill) Shultice, Batesville; Tina (Rodney) Brassfield, Vardaman, and Annette (Ernest) Goodson, Calhoun City; sister, Deloris (Billy) Murphree, Senatobia; nine grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by brothers, Velton Jenkins, Corbon Jenkins and Orbon Jenkins, and sister, Jovena Mahan.

Her funeral service was Sunday at 2 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Vardaman with Bro. Robert Earl Alexander officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Vardaman. Pallbearers were Aaron Brassfield, Dallas Goodson, Dusty Goodson, Wade Shultice, Wesley Shultice, Clovis Webster Jr. and Colby Webster.

Jimmy Ray White, 60, of Calhoun City died Monday, March 9, 2015 on County Road 419 in Calhoun City. He was born January 3, 1955 in Memphis, the son of Lenon White and  Sarah Nell Lafayette Watkins. He was a Calhoun county maintenance employee, member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, an avid Mississippi State Bulldog and Vardaman Ram Fan.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 10, 2015 from 5-8 p.m. at Calhoun City First Baptist Church in Calhoun City.  The funeral service will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Calhoun City First Baptist Church in Calhoun City,  with Bro. Benny Hill and  Bro. Mike Smith officiating.  Burial will Poplar Springs Cemetery in Vardaman. Pryor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Curtis Dennis

Curtis Wayne Dennis, 71, went to be with the Lord Monday, March 9, 2015 at his home in Water Valley after a long battle with cancer. He was born August 6, 1943 in Yalobusha County, to the late Henry Dudley and Annie Patton Dennis.  He served in the United States Army and the Army National Guard.  He was a self employed contractor, a member of the Yalobusha Chain Saw Crew and the Coffee Shop Club at Turnage Drugs. He was an active and faithful member of O’Tuckolofa Baptist Church in Water Valley where he served as a choir member, chief biscuit baker for Brotherhood and any maintenance work at the church.  He enjoyed working around his home, driving his tractor and playing solitaire. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Visitation will be Friday, March 13,  from 5-7 p.m. at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Funeral services will be in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks at 10 a.m., Saturday with Bro. Dan Dickerson and Bro. Bennie Turnage officiating.  Burial will be in the Anchor Cemetery in Yalobusha County.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Dennis, Water Valley; his daughter, Melissa Ann Dennis (Charles) Ball, Quitman; his son, Paul Wayne (Sylvia) Dennis, Crystal Springs; two sisters, Erma Dennis (Sam) Hollowell and Joyce Ann (Robby) Bishop, all of Water Valley; three brothers, Charles Dudley (Paulette) Dennis, Water Valley; Roger Lee (Lynn) Dennis, Oxford,  and Bill (Hope) Dennis, Paris, and three grandchildren, James Robert Dennis, Christopher Wayne Ball and William Allen Ball.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Mar. 11 from 6-8 p.m. at New Life Church in Calhoun City. The funeral service will be Thursday at Calhoun City gymnasium at 1 p.m. with Pastor Stephon Tucker officiating. Burial will be in Piney Jordan Cemetery in Eupora.

Survivors include her mother, Cathleen Hych; one daughter, Kashrya Guyton; brothers, Cartin McBride, Andre Perry, Tyrone Hych, and sisters, Catessa Brown, Rochelle McBride, Jamie Hych and Jamirkle Hych.

Kanariya Chante Guyton, 11, died Friday, March 6, 2015 in Pontotoc county. She was born July 2, 2003 in Oktibbeha County, the daughter of Kenneth Guyton and Catina McBride. She was a sixth grader at Calhoun City Elementary School.

Visitation is Wednesday, Mar. 11 from 6-8 p.m. at New Life Church in Calhoun City. The funeral service is Thursday at Calhoun City gymnasium at 1 p.m. with Pastor Stephon Tucker officiating. Burial will be in Piney Jordan Cemetery in Eupora.

She is survived by a sister, Kashrya Guyton, and her father, Kenneth Guyton.

Pauline Elizabeth Prewitt. She was the wife of Charles Edward Ellis. She was a homemaker and member of Taylor Church of God of Prophecy.

Helen Newman, 83, Greenville,  died Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at her residence.
Born April 16, 1932 in Greenville,  she was the daughter of the late Harry R. Davis and the late
Hazel Gorman Davis. She was the wife of the late Lee A. Newman.
She was a retired healthcare worker and member of Lake Washington Baptist Church.

(JD) Darnell, Glen Allen; brother, Terry O. (Harriett) Davis, Hitchcock, TX; grandchildren, Lee and Melissa
Newman, Brandon; Casey and Steve Megow, Brentwood, TN., Will and Paige Tolliver, Cleveland; Jason and Diana Tolliver, Greenville; Johnny and Emily Darnell, Calacali, Ecuador, and Davis and Emily
Darnell, Rolling Fork; nine great-grandchildren and numerous niece and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Harry L. Davis and William E. Davis, sister, Barbara Nimmons.
Her  funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Turkey Creek Baptist Church with Bro. Jimmy McLendon
officiating. Interment will be in Turkey Creek Cemetery in Bruce.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Lee Newman, III., Will Tolliver, Jason Tolliver, Johnny Darnell, Davis Darnell and Steve Megow.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Turkey Creek Baptist
Church.

Scottie Spratlin Ward, 88, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2015 at her daughter’s residence in Bruce. She was a member of Vardaman First Baptist Church. Mrs. Ward retired from Vardaman Schools as a cafeteria worker. 

Visitation will be Monday, March 16, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home in Vardaman.

Her funeral will be Tuesday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at Vardaman First Baptist Church with Bro. Joey Hamilton officiating assisted by Bro. Archie Goodwin and Bro. Benny Hill. Burial to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Adam Hamilton, Jeff Hamilton, Bryson Rodgers, Andy Thomas, Tyler Thomas and Neal Washington.

Her survivors include two daughters, Connie (Bro. Joey) Hamilton, Bruce, and Faye Ward, Ackerman; step daughter; Ann “Ronald” Ross, Woodland; one son, Kenneth Hardin, Thorn; a sister, Louise Shelton, Grenada; her grandchildren, Melody McKenzie, Mistie Thomas, Mike Hardin, Adam Hamilton, Jenna Beth Hamilton and a host of step grandchildren; four great grandchildren and a host of step great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband C.P. Ward and a son Billy Hardin. Her parents were the late Winfred and Lois Collums Spratlin.

Dewey Melton, 68, of Texarkana, Tx., died March 9, 2015 at his home. He was born September 23, 1946, in Bruce, the son of Albert and Clara Melton. He was a member of Redwater Baptist Church. He was retired from Red River Army Depot.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Loy Helen Melton; one son, Randall Melton and wife, Ronna; one granddaughter, Amanda Melton; three sisters, Dottie Kelley and Faye (Buford) Hallum, Texarkana, Tx., and Doris Shoemake, Bruce, and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by one brother, Dalton “Bob” Melton; two sisters, Dot Hubbard and Joyce Peeples; two nephews, Randy Kelley and Tony Melton, and one niece, Debbie Hallum Norwood.

His funeral service was Friday, March 13, 2015 at Chapelwood Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Owens and Rev. Mike Powell officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Texarkana, Tx.
