James Wilson

James Dallas Wilson, 71, of Kilmichael, passed away March 30, 2019 at Baptist Hospital in Jackson. Born October 28, 1947 in Montevista, he was the son of Ovis R. Wilson and Betty Slaughter Fleming. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, and was retired after working many years as a self-employed painter.  A true outdoorsman, he loved to be in the woods deer hunting, or fishing on the Tallahatchie River.  He also spent a lot of time trapping. He was an avid fan of his Ole Miss Rebels. Football and baseball were his favorites, but he was red and blue all the way.

Above all, his greatest joy was his family, and he cherished the time spent with his grandkids and great-grandkids.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him, but he has left a lifetime of memories that will live on until they meet again someday.  

A memorial service celebrating his life was April 7 at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City with Bro. Jimmy Vance officiating.  

He leaves his wife, Sharon Wilson, Kilmichael; daughters, Dawn (Andy) Leach, Kilmichael, and Jennifer Bailey, Batesville; son Eli (Alicia) Wilson, Hamburg, AR; sisters, Linda (M.C.) Little, Pearl; Betty Fleming, Long Beach, and Paula (Clay) Parten, Pass Christian; grandchildren, Logan Harper, Kilmichael; Justin (Jessica) Harper, Pope; Sonya Bailey, Batesville; Trevor Bailey, Marks,  and Natalie and Dillon Wilson, both of Hamburg, AR; great-grandchildren, D.C. Harper, James Harper, Savannah Harper, and Bo Harper. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ann Smith; and brother, Ned Ross Wilson.

Roy Clark

Roy Eugene Clark, 84, died April 8, 2019 at the State of Mississippi Veterans Home in Oxford. He was born May 20, 1934 to Tobe Eugene and Bertha Carr Clark.

He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oxford. He married his sweetheart, Nancy Goldman Clark, on July 12, 1954. The couple spent a timeless 64 years together abounding with three children and decades of memories.

In addition to his family life, he served his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force at the age of 17. He had an expansive career in the Air Force for over 20 years where he fought  in the Vietnam Conflict. By the time retirement came calling in 1973 he had achieved the rank of Master Sargent, and received several notable awards such as; Two Air Force Commendation awards, and One  Meritorious Service Medal.

Upon retiring from the armed forces he enrolled in college at the University of Mississippi where he not only earned a Bachelor in Public Administration, but also a Masters of Criminal Justice. After obtaining his degrees he taught college courses and was financial advisor for over 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Goldman Clark; sons, Michael Clark (Dr. Fawn Lewis) Tulsa, Ok.; Roy Clark (Carol Anne) Indianola, and Marvin Clark (Nina)  Beebe, Ar.; sisters, Louise Watson, Banner; Francies Gentry, Glendola; Peggy Tutor,   Pontotoc, and Carol Cowsert, Banner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Troy, Dwight and Terry Clark, and sister Katie Ellison.

His funeral service was Friday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home with Major Caleb Clark and Rev. Wesley Hughes officiating. A graveside service with military honors was at Bruce Cemetery.

Ruby Walker

Ruby Lee Doss Walker, 70, of Big Creek, died March 20, 2019. Better known as “Sexy Lady Six Gun Shooter” of Big Creek, she was born February 16, 1939 to Henry and Creasie Doss. Her sisters and brothers called her “Tag”.

She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Goff Chapel Church of God, later known as Daniel’s Temple Church of God in Derma,. She was married to Booker T. Walker on July 10, 1985.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Douglas Doss, Sonya (Jeff) Doss, Brad Doss, JoAnn (R.V.) Bobo, Q.T. Doss, all of Calhoun City; Vernon Doss, Gore Springs; Chris Gregg, Alabama; step-children, Ada Corbitt, Betty Edmond, Lois Hervey, Henry T. Fox, all of Calhoun City; Sue Davidson and Romona Hightower, Memphis; Linda Fox, Tulsa, Ok. and Clemmie Walker, Bruce; adopted children, Jessie and Sonya Welch, Calhoun City; sisters, Lillie Moore, Memphis; Earnestine Williams, Tupelo; Izora Westmoreland, Sadie Doss, Monette Jackson, all of Derma; brothers, A.B. Doss, Memphis and Howard Doss, Derma; sister-in-law, Mary Mays, Calhoun City; 48 grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Eunice Doss; her parents; sister, Ada Vaster and Mary Jennings; brothers, James, Hosie, Eugene and Judge Doss, and step-children, J.W. and Peggie Gordon.

Her funeral service was March 30 at Daniel Temple Church of God with Elder Henry Doss officiating. Burial was in Chapel Hill Cemetery with Belle Memorial Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Jason Gates, Donyte Pass, Randy Doss, Bobby Marshall, Larry Williams and Roger Westmoreland.

Mary Kate Melton

Mary Kate Johnson Melton, 81, passed away peacefully April 11 at her home in Greenville surrounded by her loving family. Born July 16, 1937 in Vardaman, she was the daughter of Rubye Neil  and Ludie Alexander Johnson. She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church in Greenville, and was retired from Reliable Electric after many years of service. She graduated from Vardaman High School in 1954, and married James Edward “Jamie” Melton  April 4, 1957. They spent 58 wonderful years together until his passing in 2015. 

Among her hobbies were reading, crocheting, and playing piano. She cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as “mamaw cake.” She loved playing board games with them, and was very competitive. They will always remember how she wouldn’t “let” them win “just because” they were her grandchildren. 

She will be deeply missed by her family, but the memories she left behind will remain in their hearts forever. 

A funeral service celebrating her life was Saturday at Pryor Funeral Home with Bro. Robert Alexander officiating. Interment was at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Big Creek.

Serving as pallbearers were Mike Chandler, Rick Huffman, Don Huffman, Sonny Fugett, Tommy Fugett and Victor Bruce Johnson. 

She leaves her son, James Terry (Ellen) Melton, Greenville; sisters, Susie (Rex) Chandler, Grenada and Peggy (Emile) Rollins, Greenville; grandchildren, Emily Lanell (Aaron) Bond, Brandon, and Teri Beth (Matt) Samples, Potts Camp, and great-grandchildren, Blake, Trasan and James Kyle Samples.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James “Jamie” Melton; brother, George B. Johnson, and sisters, Nelda Huffman, Ruby Gatlin, Alla Mae and Nancy Johnson.

Dot Langford

Dorothy “Dot” Harrison Langford, 87, passed away peacefully at NMMC in Tupelo Sunday, April 14, 2019. Born February 13, 1932, she was the daughter of  Dallas Lloyd and  Lula Mae Wiggins Lloyd.  She was born in Slate Springs, and lived there during her youth. Upon her marriage to Grady “Tic” Harrison, she moved to Calhoun City where she lived, raised her children, and worked at Kellwood Co. for over 40 years.  After his untimely death in 2001, she moved to Traceway Manor in Tupelo. While there, she met and married Bill Langford (affectionately known as “Son”) from Amory,  in 2010.   

A funeral service celebrating her life will be Thursday, April 18 at 11 am at Pryor Funeral Home with Rev. Drew Richardson officiating. There will be a visitation from 9 am until service time at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Oak Springs Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Kevin Ward, Joey Ward, Tyler Harrison, Eddie McDill, Dale Langford, and Richard Milstead.

She leaves her husband, Bill Langford; son, James (Jeanette) Harrison, Atlanta, GA; sister, Betty Dees, Derma; son-in-law, Dennis Buckner; grandchildren, Kevin (Stephanie) Ward, Ocean Springs; Angela (Eddie) McDill, Forest; Joey (Maggie) Ward, Athens, AL; Tyler Harrison, Elkin, NC; Dori (Craig) Richardson, Mooreville; Luke (Pam) Buckner, Madison, and Brandy (Nik) Carnathan, Saltillo, and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Grady “Tic” Harrison; precious daughter, Joy Buckner; brother, James Lloyd, and sisters, Eva Winfield and Cora Bray.

Doug Betterton

Winford Douglass (Doug) Betterton, 88, of Memphis died peacefully in his home April 11, 2019. He was an Air Force retiree, worked for Graham’s Lighting Fixtures until he retired to enjoy fishing, visitng family and dedication his time to his church. He was a member of VFW Post 4916 until they dissolved and where he was a Commanding Officer. He then became a member of VFW Post 5571 in Bruce.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Lynn Betterton; sisters, Barbara Pounders, Betty Sue Betterton, dale Smith; brother, Glen Betterton. He leaves his brother, William “Bill” Oren (Shirley) Betterton, Seven Springs, NC; daughter, Carolyne L. (Bill) Avery, Bartlett, Tn.; sons,  Gerald S., Edward (Ken), and Dennis M. Betterton, Portland, In., three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Tully Childs

Tully Wayne Childs, 71, passed away suddenly at his home in Big Creek Friday, Apr. 19, 2019. Born January 1, 1948 in Calhoun City, he was the son of Rufus Fletcher Childs, Jr. and Emma Nell Harrison Childs. He was a 1966 graduate of Calhoun City High School, and member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He was retired from Kellwood Co. in Calhoun City as shipping supervisor with over 40 years of service. He honorably served in the United States Army, and proudly fought for his country in the Vietnam War. A true outdoorsman, he loved to either be in the woods hunting or on the river fishing. Above all, his family was the most important thing to him, especially his grandchildren, who could always make him smile. Tully was a good man, and he will be missed by the many that knew and loved him. His love for God, his family, his country, and his community will never be forgotten. 

A graveside service celebrating his life is Monday, Apr. 22, 2019 at 2 pm at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery in Big Creek. Bro. Mark Longino will be officiating. 

Serving as pallbearers will be Eric Childs, Jordan Childs, Vernon Springfield, Jr, and Cole Hutchins.

He leaves sons, Shane (Leigh) Childs, Derma, and Russell (Kristy) Childs, Olive Branch; daughter, Amy (Vernon) Springfield, Hernando; brothers, Ronnie (Patricia) Childs, Big Creek; Donald Rufus (Dianna) Childs, Grenada; grandchildren, Eric and Alison Childs,Vernon Springfield, Jr, Mattie and Amyiah Springfield, Ivy and Cole Hutchins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Lois Young

Lois Spratlin Young passed away April 9, 2019 at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison. A memorial service will be April 27 at 11 a.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Bruce. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Bruce Cemetery.

A native of Calhoun County, she was born August 29, 1927 in Loyd community to Earlie Arthur and Esther Stewart Spratlin. She was married in 1949 to her childhood sweetheart, Hollie Spencer Young. They lived in Calhoun City until their move to Atlanta, GA in 1975. After his untimely death in 1986, she moved to Grenada to be closer to family. While there, she was a member of First Baptist Church. In 2014 she moved to St. Catherine’s Village in Madison. In every city she lived, she developed many close friendships that were her joy and delight. She deeply loved her family, and had a servant’s heart for caregiving others. Her home was always the center for fun filled family gatherings.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; daughter, Carolyn Young Goodson, Grenada, and sisters, Elvira Vanlandingham, Earlene Barnes, Hortense McKelroy, and Bonnie Bennett, all of Bruce.

She is survived by sons, Joe (Beth) Young, Ridgeland, and Sid (Julie) Young, Lilburn, GA; grandsons Carlton (Michelle) Goodson, Grenada; Spence (Dorthy) Young, Madison; Stewart (Brittany) Young, Lantana, TX; granddaughter Holly Davis, Rolling Fork; great-grandchildren, Parker Goodson, Katie and Carolyn Davis, Marie, Joe, Grace, and Chloe Young, Kian Hobden; son-in-law, Roger Dale Goodson,  Grenada, and brother, A.D. (Erma) Spratlin, Bruce.

Virginia VanLandingham

Virginia Ward VanLandingham, 84, of Vardaman passed away April 18   in hospice care at NMMC, Tupelo. She was born June 21, 1934 to Maylon Ernest and Elizabeth Wheeler Ward. She was a lifelong member of Vardaman Baptist Church and retired seamstress from Kellwood in Calhoun City. She had a contagious smile that changed the dynamic of any place she entered. When the Lord created her, he gave her an extra dose of generosity to brighten the lives others as she so often did.

She is survived by her husband of 64 ½ years, William Fred VanLandingham, Vardaman; sister; Joann James, Derma; brothers, Carl Ward, Memphis, and George Ward, Bentonville, Ar.; son Richard (Angela) VanLandingham, Memphis; grandchildren, Taylor VanLandingham, Richmond, Va. and Tyson VanLandingham, Denver, Co. and great-grandchildren Amara and Noah.

Pallbearers were Stacy Hawks, Bryant McCluskey, Craig Williams, Dillon Williams, Richard VanLandingham and Tyson VanLandingham.

 A celebration honoring her life was  Sunday with Bro. Fred Hartley and Bro. Johnathan Peeples officiating. She be laid to rest at Midway Cemetery in Vardaman.

Maxine Shinall

Maxine Littlejohn Shinall, 82, was called to her Heavenly home from Baptist Nursing Home in Calhoun City Tuesday, Apr. 16, 2019. Born August 20, 1936 in Pontotoc County, she was the daughter of Thomas Walker and Beulah Williams Littlejohn. She was a 1955 graduate of Eupora High School, and member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She worked 22 years at Glenn Slacks, and most recently for Franklin Corp., where she retired after many years. On April 1, 1956, she married Charles Edward Shinall, and they spent 60 years together until his passing in 2016. She taught Sunday school and directed music at Oak Grove Baptist Church   many years. In her free time she loved to work in her flower garden or play word search. Above all, she loved her family, especially her great-grandchildren. She cherished the time spent with them. She knew Jesus as her Lord and Savior, and her family has peace knowing she is now home and reunited with the loved ones that have gone on before her. 

Her funeral service was  April 17 at Pryor Funeral Home with Bro. Robert Alexander  officiating. Interment was in  Lloyd Cemetery in Vardaman. Serving as pallbearers were Allen Blackwelder, Ronnie Clark, Dean Brumett, Tim Littlejohn, Cody Clements and Dale Medders. 

She leaves daughter, Mary “Cathy” (Larry) Blackwelder, Pittsboro; brother, Alavon Littlejohn, Eupora; sisters Nadine Harris,  Mathiston; Elaine Medder, Mathiston; Ilene Fleming, Eupora; Katie Robinson, Arab, AL; granddaughter, Michele (Keith) Gaskin, Pittsboro; step-grandson, Allen (Carla) Blackwelder; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Emily, Haley Gaskin, and step great-grandchildren, Hayden McCostlin and Bryce Blackwelder. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; daughter, Melba Jo Shinall; grandson, Jason Holder; sisters, Eleanor Clark and Dorothy Fredrick; and brothers, Arlis, Buddy, J.R., Cleveland, Thomasn, Marlton and Marvon Littlejohn.

Charlcye Weeks

Charlcye Ann Goodson Weeks, 80, passed away peacefully at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Calhoun City  Saturday, April 20, 2019.  Born February 4, 1939 in Calhoun County, she was the daughter of Charley Ross Goodson and Betty Aston Goodson. 

She graduated from Calhoun City High School in 1957. She worked as a seamstress at Kellwood over 40 years, and was a very active and faithful member of Pittsboro Baptist Church. She had a strong love for music and playing piano. In her spare time, she enjoyed being outdoors working in her garden and flowerbeds. She also loved being in the kitchen where she was best known for baking sweet potato pies. She had an open heart for all who knew her and was always willing to help others.  A very kind and sweet lady, she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.  

A graveside service celebrating her life will be Wednesday, April 24 at 11 am at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens  Bro. Vincent Anderson will be officiating. There will be a visitation from 10:30 am until service time at the cemetery.

She leaves her daughters, Janice (John) Jarvis of Osceola, AR, and Margie Besaw of Louisville, KY.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Betty McKinstry.

John Flippin

John Thomas Flippin, 89, passed away peacefully at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Calhoun City Apr. 23, 2019. Born January 7, 1930 in Atlanta, he was the son of  John Conrad and Helen Keys Flippin. He was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church, and was a retired Baptist pastor, as well as a retired principal of Vardaman Elementary School. He married the love of his life, Barbara Dyer, January 10, 1949, and they spent 60 wonderful years together. He graduated from Messick High School in Memphis, and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy with a minor in Psychology from Southwestern University in Memphis. He  received his Master’s degree in Education from the University of Houston (TX), and secondary education degree from Mississippi State University. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was an active member of the SCV and American Legion. One of his favorite pastimes was building model aircraft, but he was also a history lover, and writing short stories. He  was a man of great faith who loved his family and leaves behind many precious memories. They take comfort in knowing he is alive and well with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 

His funeral service was Thursday at Pryor Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Permenter officiating and Rev. Bobby Brock delivering the eulogy. Interment was at Calhoun City Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Richard Winter, Brandon Winter, Austin Winter, Parker Winter, Kerry Flippin, and Jared Flowers. Honorary pallbearers were Sid Murphy, Robert Boland, and the members of the SCV and the American Legion. 

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Barbara Dyer Flippin, Calhoun City; daughters, Rebecca (Richard) Winter, Bruce; Heather Flippin, Little Rock; son, Mark Flippin, Clarksdale; grandchildren, Brandon, Austin, Ashley and Parker Winter, all of Bruce; Kerry Flippin, St. Louis; Jeff (Mandy) Basler, Cleveland; Lindsey (Jared) Flowers, Grenada, and three great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Flippin.

Garry Sanders

Garry Wayne “JR” Sanders, Jr., 37, passed away in Grenada County  April 22, 2019. Born April 15, 1982, in Tallahatchie County. He was the son of Garry Wayne Sanders, Sr. and Janet Puckett Sanders. He attended Enterprise High School, and received his certificate of Auto Body Repair from Holmes Community College. He was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, and was employed as a band saw operator with Martin’s Cardboard in Pontotoc. He and his wife Tiffany were married July 1, 2005, and have spent 13 years together. He loved working in his shop and restoring old cars. He was the kind of person who could make anyone laugh, but also give you the shirt off of his back. Above all, his family meant the most to him. He loved spending time with his kids, and always stayed in touch with everyone in his family. A very kind and loving young man, he will be deeply missed by his family and friends. 

His funeral service was Friday at Pryor Funeral Home with Rev. George Love officiating. Interment was at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Marrico Hayes, Ronnie Braden Lawrence, Al De’Aundra Westmoreland, Christopher Hardwick, Jerry Sanders, Caylon Johnson, William Russell  and Rickey Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Aaron Bryce Sanders, Jace Isaiah Sanders, Garry Sanders, Sr., Earby, Freddy and Anthony Puckett.

He leaves his wife of 13 years, Tiffany Hardwick Sanders; parents, Garry Sanders, Sr. and Janet Puckett Sanders; daughter, Joslynn Rena Sanders, Eupora; sons, Aaron Bryce Sanders, McCall Creek; Jace Isaiah Sanders and Jhett Wayne-Truce Sanders, both of Eupora; sisters, Donielle Farmer of Mountain Home, AR, Tonya Stephens of Brookhaven, Rhanada Clark of Stromsburg, NE, and Patricia Langley of Big Creek; and a brother, Jerry Sanders of Terry, MS; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Kayla Black

Kayla Dianne Nicole Murphree Black, 24, passed away April 24, 2019 in Thorn. She was Baptist by faith. She was a loving devoted mother and daughter. She was a kind, fun, and understanding sister and a comforting friend to all. Her personality was bright like a ray of sunshine, uplifting and very inspiring to all that came in contact with her.

She is survived by her sons, Hunter Jace  and Charlie Black; mother, Samantha “Sam” Murphree; brothers, Dustin (Crystal) Murphree (Crystal) and Shane (Michelle) Murphree and sisters, Samra (JR) Fraize and Abby (Ethan) Fraize; nieces and nephews, Maci and Paxton Murphree, RJ and Addalyn Lollar; grandparents, Jerry and Judy Dyson, and special friend, Jamie Arrington.

She is preceded in death by her father, Tracy Murphree; grandmother, Joyce Dyson; great grandmother, Bessie Mae Smith and  nephew, Bryson Haven.

Pallbearers were Dustin Murphree, Buster Nichols, JR Lollar, Ethan Kuykendall, Ryan Kuykendall and Jamie Arrington. Honorary pallbearers were Shane Murphree, Jerry “Curly” Dyson, Josh Patterson and Richard Dyson.

Her funeral  was Sunday at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc. Burial was at Taylor Church of God Cemetery in Vardaman.

Mattie Armstrong

Mattie Armstrong, 86,  originally from Big Creek,  passed peacefully with family by her side April 23, 2019 at the ABC Care Center in Guttenberg, IA.

She moved to Guttenberg in the fall of 2007 to spend time with her son, Barry and his family.  She  was born September 16, 1932, the daughter of Harry and Della (Gaston) Moore of Big Creek.  

She was a member of Bridge Chapel Missionary Baptist Church where she served as an usher for many years. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, spending time with grandchildren, fishing, garage sales, sitting on the front porch, watching pup (Cy, the Armstrong family pet), attending Clayton Ridge football games with Sharon and talking with family members on the phone. 

She is survived by daughter, Anne (Clemmie) Walker, Calhoun County; son, Barry (Michelle) Armstrong, Guttenberg, I; siblings, Claudine and Alberta Armstrong, Pittsboro; Walter (Ellen) Moore, Big Creek; Katherine Thomas, Milwaukee, WI; grandchildren, Tawanda Armstrong, Lemonda Walker, Tracy Gordan, Antonio, Ke’Andre and Erica Armstrong, five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; son Earnest (Puddin) Armstrong; brother Jack and sister-in-law Emma Moore; sister Gennie McKee and daughter-in-law Mattie Armstrong. 

She will be remembered for her confidence, saying what’s on her mind and calling it like it was!  She will truly be missed by many. Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, 207 S. 1st St, Guttenberg, IA.


Johnny Golden

Johnny Lee Golden, 78, passed away Monday, April 29, 2019 at his son’s residence after an extended illness. He was born March 9, 1941 in Chickasaw County to W.C. and Odene Bevill Golden. He was a member of Splinterback Church. He was a retired employee of Weyerhaeuser Company as a quad saw operator. He loved his horses, wagons and especially John Deere Tractors and joy riding in his Dodge truck.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and the love of his life, wife, Betty Guthrie Golden.

Those left to honor his life and memory are daughter, Connie (James) Moore, Bruce; son, Randy (Mary Lou) Golden, Pontotoc; brother, James Golden, Houston, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Wednesday, May 1 at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce from  5-8 p.m.

His funeral service will be Thursday, May 2 Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. with Bro. Harvey Galloway officiating. Burial will be in Collums Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Willie Bevill, Brandon Golden, Timmy King, Chris Moore, Reggie Moore and Shane O’Bannon.  Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Howell, Austin King, Jaden McVay and Jai McVay.

Marquetta Nolan

Marquetta Sue Nolan of Blackshear, Ga. died April 28, 2019. She was born July 25, 1965, the daughter of  Sherman and Ina Nolan.

She was one-of-a-kind, redefining unique. “I may have other friends, but there will never be another Marquetta. She was one of a kind,” a friend best described her.

 She would go out of her way to help anyone in need, even if it meant she went without. She loved her family--her children and grandchildren were her first priority. The bond she shared with her sisters was like no other and she credited her parents for her “never give up” attitude. She never met a stranger, had a multitude of friends, and her huge heart and kind soul will always be remembered. She is already missed by many and will live on in their hearts.

Her funeral service is Wednesday at Harrington Chapel at 10 a.m. A graveside service will be Friday, May 3 at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Calhoun County at 2 p.m.

Survivors include her children, Jaquetta (Raymond) Henry, Jamie Wilson; James (Karen) Lipe; grandchildren, Kurstin, Raymond Jr., Shanna, Brooke, Katie, Phenelope, Ryan, Alyah, Heaven, and five sisters, Martha (Robert), Margaret (Brownie), Marilyn and Maria Nolan. 

Butch Bounds

Joseph Lee “Butch” Bounds, 76, passed away in Big Creek April 20, 2019.  Born July 19, 1942, in Coffeeville, he was the son of t Charles  and Mary Sue Harrison Bounds. He was a 1960 graduate of Aberdeen High School, and proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Over the years, he drove a truck for Coca Cola Company in Greenwood, and Shaw’s Meat Market in Grenada. He was an avid fan of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and was always tuned in on game day. His favorite past time was sitting on the creek bank fishing or riding  old country roads. His family and friends will always remember the stories he told about “The Good Ole Days.” He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

His funeral service celebrating was Saturday at Chapel Hill Cemetery with Bro. Jim Vance will be officiating.  

He leaves niece, Lil (Randall) Gordon, Holcomb, and great nieces, Kelley (Brandon) Smith, Grenada and Kasey Gordon, Holcomb. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Charleye Belle.

Katelin Stone

Katelin Elizabeth Grace Stone, 10, of Big Creek overcame her battle with cancer  and entered into the arms of Jesus on April 30, 2019, at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.

She was a second grader in Mrs. Langford’s class at Calhoun City Elementary School. She was a faithful member of Grace Fellowship Church in Calhoun City and also participated in Awana at Shiloh Baptist Church in Big Creek. Hunting and fishing with Hope Outdoors was one of her favorite pastimes, but even when she was outside being a country girl she made sure to look pretty and sparkle. She loved her “brothers and sisters” of Dream Riders Chapter H and was passionate about helping make a difference in the lives of others. Throughout her 2 1/2  year battle with cancer, her strength, perseverance, and courage were a light and inspiration to all around her. She believed in the power of Jesus and wanted others to know the importance of prayer and the impact it had during her journey as she repeatedly defied the odds stacked against her.

She was happiest when at home surrounded by her favorite people. She is survived by her parents, Cecil and Jessica Stone, Big Creek, as well as her siblings Savannah, Adrianna, Braylee, Hunter and David. Her maternal grandparents are Tony and Kelly Hughes, Cadaretta, and Teresa and John Rosa, Big Creek, and her paternal grandparents, Jesse and Bernice Stone, Derma. A host of many other aunts, uncles, and cousins live on to share her incredible story and  mighty accomplishments during her short number of years.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 3 at 11 am at Grace Fellowship Church in Calhoun City with Dr. John Warren officiating. She will be laid to rest at Spring Hill Cemetery in Slate Springs. Pallbearers will be Rob Easley, Rooster Gann, Josh Morgan, Andy Mulkey, Lynn Price and Robert Upchurch.

Memorials can be made to the children’s fund at Grace Fellowship Church in Katelin’s honor, Highway 8 East, Calhoun City, MS 38916

Jimmie Mae Jones

 Jimmie Mae Jones of Calhoun City passed away  Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at Baptist Nursing Center in Calhoun City. Born  August 29, 1924 to Johnny  and Fannie Evans Brannon in Yalobusha County, Mississippi, she was 94.

Shewas retired from Pennaco Hosery Mill in Grenada. A member of Central Baptist Church, she also attended Bethany Baptist Church in Slate Springs. Her hobbies included gardening, flowers, and sewing. Although family and friends alike share their grief in her passing, there is comfort in knowing she has been called home to a better place.

She leaves daughters Kathleen Marshall, Memphis; Martha Frances (Kenny) Cannon,   Big Creek; Mary Evelyn (Eddie) Long, Bruce; son-in-law Jimmy Mawk, Tuscaloosa, Al.; 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

There will be a visitation with the family  Saturday, May 4 from noon until service time at 2 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce.  Brother Kenneth Armstrong will officiate the funeral service with Bro Joey Hamilton assisting. She will be laid to  rest in Pinecrest Memorial Garden Cemetery in Calhoun City. Pallbearers will be Brannon Armstrong, Klint Byars, Kyle Cannon, Chad Harkness, Kel Lovorn, Harlie Mawk, Cameron Moore, Layton Morgan, Casey McGinnes, Landon McGinnes and J.P. Stewart.

Jimmie was preceded in death by her Husband, James Jones; Daughter Carolyn Mawk; and Sister Annie Rae Blaylock.
