Raymond Head, 88, of Albuquerque, NM, where he resided for close to three years, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014 at VA Medical Center in Albuquerque He was formerly of Calhoun County. He was born May 23, 1926 to John Roy and Bessie Bell Head in Angelina County, TX, where he lived until age 6, when his family moved back to Calhoun County. He was one of 13 children brought up on a farm and stayed on the farm, the last at Benela Hill, where he spent the better part of his life, other than being drafted in the U.S. Army during World War II where he served in the Military Police as part of the occupying army throughout Europe. He served in Belgium, France and Germany. He was known as an artisan of whittling walking sticks as his hobby along with his love for music. He was a former member of the Natchez Trace Dulcimer Group. He picked the guitar, played the dulcimer and sang. His love for music took him many places. He enjoyed making music for others as well as just for himself.
Visitation will be Saturday, Dec. 13, from noon until time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City with Rev. Robert Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Old Providence Cemetery in Lafayette County. Pryor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be his nephews David Head, James Douglas ‘Doug’ Head, James Keith ‘Jimmy’ Head, John Robert ‘Robbie’ Head, and close friends, Durwood Cannon and Lynn Reedy. He is survived by one sister, Bessie Maxine Crago, Birmingham, AL; three sisters-in-law, 20 nieces, 14 nephews, cousins and many friends.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Nina Bell Peoples, Eva Idell Head, Frances Louise Watson, Alice Ruth Logan, Clara Lavell Baker; six brothers, James Aubrey Head; twin brother, Roy Head; George Dewy Head, Robert Betrum ‘Bob’ Head, Clark Jackson ‘Jack’ Head, Arlis Durrell Head; niece, Dale Coleman, and nephew, Donald Head.
